My vote is the 597 HB more accurate then 10/22. But I do love the Sr22 and its look haven't shot one for accuracy yet. My friend has a 10/22 and so does everyone else lol. So which one do you like and why? Shootout? Lol

I've had both. I've sold both. If I had to choose between the 2, I'd prefer the 597. Didn't care much for the 10/22's aftermarket, and was perfectly fine with 10 round mag's for plinking gopher's. I also found the 597 to be more accurate than my 10/22.

Lots of people complained about the 597, but after looking up the guide rod fix I never had another issue with mine so long as I stuck with the 3rd gen 10 round mags that the rifle came with. That being said, my CZ455 is better than both of them...

The 10/22 there is a reason it's being copied so much. The mags are far and away superior more aftermarket. However it will cost you...

597 20 HB , 3rd gen mags or 22 rd Promag , they work great , the Promag trick is to insert the mag at an angle , the rear of the mag first to make contact with the bottom inside of the receiver then push the mag froward till the front of the mag is in place . The Mag has the locking notch at the rear of the mag , if you just push the mag straight up into the mag well it does not lock in very well and will be lose and wiggle .

Inserting the Promag correctly is the trick , they run like butter and the bolt hold open works every time .

My 597 20 HB is very Very accurate right out of the box , the biggest problem people have is with the 2 guide rods binding ,,,, Remember do Not Over Tighten the 2 guide rods " clamp " , just snug other wise the 2 guide rods will not flex ( move ) and the bolt will bind and cause FTF , FTE . The 3rd gen mags work great all the bugs are gone .

Just my 2 cents .

I had 597 HB and it was shotgun shell bottle cap at 25 yards accurate. That said its sold and i'm rocking a stock 10/22. I think the 10/22 feeds and functions slightly better. I'm sure when I get a nice stiff barrel it will tighten right up. Both are pretty great 10/22s for sure.

597 is definitely accurate compared to most 1022s. Although every once in a while you get an accurate 1022, like the Sporter Deluxe I inherited recently. But I prefer the Marlin 795 over both those two.

Bone-stock, I would take my OD 597HB over a 10/22.
They both have pretty decent factory 10rd magazines.

Modified with an MCarbo trigger kit the 597 is even better, yet the 10/22 is the Honda Civic of customization: there is a whole lot more accurization and customization that you can do
(and probably need to do).
With a Green Mountain barrel and Power Custom DIY trigger kit, the 10/22 is more consistently accurate ... yet much more $$ than an (almost) stock 597HB.

Very nice groups !!

The Ruger 10-22 Target ( HB ) is a fine shooting rifle but for $ 789.99 Plus tax = $ 892.68 PLus shipping if you don't live close by (Cabela's.ca) , so say $910.00 + Wow .

It's a great gun but I'll stay with my 597 20 HB .

FSRC >> REMINGTON 597 20 inch HB 22LR, BLACK SYNTHETIC STOCK, 10 RD MAG & 3 X9 SCOPE $349.99 ,, I have seen them for less .

Yup!

I've had both, now only the 597 VTR, my friends experience was opposite, he has the 10/22 only now.
It depends on what you want, if you are a tinkerer, 10/22 all the way

Oh my god she went up in price,
I paid mine $539 regular price at Cabelas, 30/03/2015.
She costed me $567 (Alberta)
I saw her on sale few weeks ago at Cabelas for about the same price, but I do agree $790 is insane.
CXShooter right next to my place is still having a nice one Grey Lam/Stainless, but way cheaper then Cabelas.

I tried the Remington 597, during a Demo shoot from Remington in my area about 8 years ago.
Hopefully they improve the template, because it wasn't a very good experience to say the least.

This post comes up again and again and im still a 10/22 shooter. I like to tinker and have 2 of them, more or less improved with factory barrels. Ive even had the 795, 552 speedmaster and fired a friends 597 heavy barrel quite a bit which i thought was average at best. For me i will always have a couple 10/22s. They are very reliable, well built, very easy to break down and feel like a good ol gun made of metal and wood. Accuracy is good enough for golf balls at 50 yards and are just a lot of fun to shoot!

If you were wondering i can get dollar sized standing groups at 25 yards with the rifle on the bottom.

I even used to think the regular wood stocks were ugly but they have grown on me.

I had a Remington 597 VTR and I would have kept it but the mags were crap.
I went back to the Ruger lots of parts and I like the factory mags with steel lips.
I sold the 25 round and 110 rd mags with the last Ruger thinking I could pick up more.

I have the 597magHB which shoots accurate enough to take down coyote ( inside 100yd ).
Got a couple of old picts ...Ruko Vari 5 , 1.5x8x20 scope
