10/22 vs remington 597 vs savage 22

...Ford or Chevy?

...Coke or Pepsi?

If you're wanting to choose between a 10/22 or 597, go to your local gun store and shoulder an example of each ...or better yet, meet up with a couple of buddies at the range and spend a bit of time firing both.

Either of these rifles are solid performers in their own right with subtle differences that you really need to experience first hand in order to make a choice that is right for you. Looking for a concensus in an internet forum on which to base this decision isn't going to get you anywhere because you'll always find plenty of 'votes' for both the 10/22 and the 597 ...and that's because they're both good rifles.

When I was in the market for a .22 semi last winter, my research boiled the field down to the same two rifles ...and for me, the choice was finally based on physically handling both rifles and choosing the one that I thought had the best ergonomics for me personally (when it comes to 'feel', these two rifles are very different).

Try'em both out, then choose the one that you like the most ...either way, you can't go wrong.

Buy a 10/22 and never look back.
I have been using these for more that 30 years and the only thing better costs much more than any new stock 10/22.

Ummmm.....I think you got that wrong.
The 597 (which IS better than the 10/22) actually costs much less ;)
Come to think of it...so does tha marlin model 60, also a superior firearm.

Lets see...accuracy, dependability, ergonomics....check.
Yup! better than the 10/22:D

...and don't forget price!!

The Model 60 gets my vote. Make sure you check one out when you go to look at the other two.

I took the 597 out for the first time today ... great little gun.. seemed very reliable. Shot about 300 rounds through it at 50 yards and had an easy time keeping a decent group.

If that's the case, now you just need to decide on which 'flavour'...

.22LR...

.22WMR...

.17HMR...

...I bought mine in .22WMR trim.

Decisions, decisions...

A "standard" .22 is the .22 LR (long rifle). It's the potentially inexpensive one that comes in bricks of 500 for anywhere from $15 - $80 (very roughly speaking, of course). It can come in hollow-point or round-nose cartridges, and either in subsonic, standard, or high-velocity loadings.

The .22 WMR is the Winchester Magnum Rimfire: a longer case, more expensive, and more powerful (also flatter trajectory and more range) than the plain 'ol .22 LR.

The .17's are based on the above to cartridges. They are faster, flatter-shooting and more expensive than the above cartridges (again, roughly speaking), and they of course have lighter bullets. The .17 M2 is the "improvement" to the .22 LR (essentially same case, lighter bullet), while the .17 HMR is based on the .22 WMR. Of the two, the .17 HMR is "more" cartridge than the .17 M2.

Here's some relevant reading for you:

I have one of each(597 & 10/22), accuracy I would lean toward the Rem.Striping and cleaning I would lean the other way. Like it was mentioned before they are both good guns in their own right, so check them both out. In the end I got one of each and I like to use them both everytime I go plinking.

Popular opinion can help steer you towards a great gun, but make sure you handle it before you buy it. It might not be the most expensive purchase you'll ever make, but it's still a lot of money if you end up not liking it.

Well, today I was out gopher hunting. There were 6 or so 10/22's out, and all of them (IIRC) are finicky eaters, producing jams when not fed ammo they agree with. I know of at least 4 or 5 more 10/22 shooters, and it's the same story for them.

Reliability is great when you can find ammo they like. Even better if you can live with the 10rd factory mags.

The lemmings infest the forums! 10/22 forever!

And the posters handle is "WRONG WAY"

I use Eagle ammo in my 10/22 which gave the best groups.
However buy what you wish.:D

10/22 is a great little gun and there's lotsa aftermarket for it.

I've never had a jamming problem either with all sorts of ammo and am actually impressed with the accuracy as well.

Well another vote for the 597, but for the record my current chicken gun is a model 06 pump action Winchester for the early 30's. :)

I like my basic 597. It is accurate and reliable. I did not consider price when I bought it, I bought it because it fit and felt better than the 10/22.

Brian

My vote is for the 10/22. Good little gun right out of the box, easy to field strip, clean and reassemble and if you catch the customization bug, there are plenty of goodies to choose from.
