I picked up a 10/22 yesterday with a couple of Butler Creek's 25 round mags and had a ball shooting that sucker at the range today, put about 300 rounds through it after all was said and done! While I was there though, I made acquaintance with a fellow who said that he'd heard 10/22s are more accurate when the barrel band is removed, allowing the barrel to float free. I just tried removing it and it feels a little wobbly, but I figured someone here would know better than I do

true/false?

Thats funny, i have some people tell me their 10-22s shoot best with the barrel clamped or immobilized and the receiver floating.

i dont have the experience with rugers like i do remington bolts etc... But most times, a floated barrel promotes acccuracy.

How accurate did it shoot at the range with the barrel band on?
Some say there 10/22 shoot better with them on.... some say with them off?
I had a wood stock carbine that shot better with it off and a synthetic stock that shot better with it on!
It all boils down to accuracy and choice.
IMO the carbine stock looks goofy with the band off, so if it shoots better without one, you might as well buy another non-banded stock like a compact or Houge that handles an OEM tapered barrel.

Is your stock synthetic or wood? If its wood you can remove the barrel band and cut the end off the stock and refinish it. I think It looks better and since I've done it it has improved accuracy also. Mine did not have a wobble in it though. I free floated the barrel to about half an inch before the mounting screw just to give it some support. No issues as far as barrel drop or wobble.

synthetic. I didn't have any trouble with accuracy out to 50yds, but I'm a novice and thought I'd ask the experts. But then, since it is so easy to remove, maybe I'll just try it both ways and see what I like better.

The 16" factory compact 10/22's don't come with a barrel band, so I'm not sure why Ruger ships the 18.5" version with one.

They seem unnecessary to me. Just tighten down your v-block and you should be good to go.

so I took it out again today and tried it with and without the barrel band, I didn't notice any real difference in accuracy, I was able to hit a tennis ball on a string fairly consistently at 100yds
