Hi folks,

I came across some 10/30 AR mags a while ago. I know Zahal sells them and now one domestic retailer too. I'm thinking about picking some up but at the same time I want to hear what you have to say on the legality of these.

These are marked as either LAR-15 pistol magazines or carbine pistol magazines and have the same external dimensions as regular pinned 5/30. They look handy for 3 guns or normal training.

Just bought some Hexmag PCC mags at Barton's Big Country. Easier than extensions with my LAR mags!

You are the man!!! For the a last 15 minutes, I was trying to recall what the retailer was but I just couldn't. Took at look at Barton's, and there they are. Oh, and I like how these hexmags look.

I hate to play devils advocate but how are these legal? And please don't just say "because they're marked as pistol mags"

Actually thats all it takes. The fact that a licensed business is able to import, advertise and sell them is usually proof enough, but there is no reason why they should be illegal. Its clearly a pistil mag and is pinned to the legal number of rounds of ammunition of the calibre that they were made for.

You nailed it as far as I am concerned.

I also came across ASC 10/30 mags at some Canadian retailer I'd never heard of but once they were out of stock it never restocked again. They're still listed though afaik.

So in other words, no legal information, no fact? Just pure oppinion?

So far as it is currently they are legal. Unfortunately this may change in the future given the dual use policy the rcmp enforces. For example the 10/22 mags being able to be used in the charger pistol fiasco. They chose to enforce all 25 round mags for the 10/22 as being pistol mags and thus limited to 10 rounds. This is something that is not exactly a secret coming down the pipe behind the scenes.

Well I'm sure we could debate legal semantics until the cows come home, but every man is entitled to do as he sees fit.
While I'd love to see the proof that these are in fact legal, and not just 30 round mags, pinned to 10 and written "pistol mag" in white crayon (as blaxsun so eloquently put), I just don't see how these fit the bill and if I'm going to play in loopholes, I'd sooner just acquire more beo mags and sport 15 rounders.

Things are legal by default until the government says they aren't. Loopholes or not, semantics or not, you should be asking that someone prove they are illegal by showing you a statute or regulation that says they are not legal, as confirmed by a judge at someones trial. Anything less is just opinion and debate, blaxun's hypothetical notwithstanding.

The government has indicated it will refuse to issue import permits, this does not make it illegal. There are all kinds of things that are illegal to import that are legal to possess once they are in the country. Like car seats made in the US that don't meet CSA standards, and high volume flushing toilets, for examples.
