OK I know it's been discussed before but I can't find it.

I'm thinking of a shorter barrel for my AR. I like the look and feel of a 10.5" (like the one on my 9mm) but what's the scoop on a 223 barrel in the same length?

Reliable?

Do I have to open the gas port?

Should I look for an 11.5 instead?

Where do I find one for less than the GNP of Kenya?

Thanks.

Assuming your parts are good, and installed properly, then the only variable is the gas port size and buffer size. When you buy an upper fully assembled the gas port will be sized at the factory to the right spec for that barrel length. If it's done right, you will NEVER have a problem.
I own an armalite 11.5" that was built for me at wolverine, I have never had any functioning issues on FMJ's, only hollowpoints but that's an issue with the barrel feed ramps and upper ramps not fully aligned.

I've gone through 500 rounds a day on that thing without oiling it other than before the range and I've had no issues.

Some people have issues because they have a ####ty rifle, or an improperly sized gas port/and or wrong buffer weight.
Like any semi auto gun, it must be built right for it to function properly.

I have a DPMS 14.5" at the moment.

I just want a reliable rifle with a shorter barrel.

What kind of buffer do you need to run? Heavy?

re: Tri- rail

Go with the LMT upper in 10.5. Somebody has one for sale in EE for $1200. A good price for one that is brand new. This LMT upper is the same one that the US Navy uses in their MK18 MOD 0 CQBR.

NaOH:

While its not an absolute must, on the AR's that have a Carbine length gas system, I always use a 2H buffer, and if possible Armalite buffer springs. I find this combo, along with a little oil on the spring, makes the recoil pulse less violent, smoother, with an associated decrease in what I call Carbine "jump".

How does the saying go, don't knock it until you try it?? :) I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

Arms East has 2h buffers, and Wolverine has the springs.

As for Short barrel, I understand that its really tough to go wrong with a Stag 10.3.

Just my 2 cents.

LMT 10.5" or Stag 10.3" are both G2G. I run H buffers and have never had a problem in thousands of rounds. FWIW, I also run M16 carriers. Some people say it helps, some say it doesn't...

Buy that LMT 10.5" in the EE before I weaken and do it...

Stick with LMT if you can get your hands on one. They work. Mine came with a regular carbine buffer, but I put a H in it.

Ive got a Stag 10.3 just call Walter at Arms East and order one I have never had a single problem with FTF or FTE or any cycling whatsoever. The rifle has about 5k through it and it has been shot from 30 to -30 as long as I do my part with my reloads (mags) it will run all day long. and I hate to admit it but she doesnt always get cleaned between outings but still purrs along . It is also completely factory stock no mods at all.
