So i built me 10.5 quite a while ago but only got it out for the 3rd time last night, i put it in a gun vice so i could see exactly how its shooting....

Well im not impressed!!, the thing is all over the place and not even a pattern where i can start making corrective changes.

Any ideas where to start?

Target was 25 yards

Specs:

10.5" 1:7 twist S&J barrel
Carbine gas tube
Low pro larue gas block
Deimco BCG
Vortex strike fire red dot
Standard carbine buffer

I am using Western Munitions factory re-loaded 55gr .223

I wanted to be sure it wasnt just me so i got three other guys at the range to try it and they had the exact same results

please note that there was a screw up in my emails and S&J was not the responding vendor for my barrel issue

Edit march 19/2013

The issue with the barrel extension being loose is the problem at hand, this very well may not be the issue but its a problem which S&J Hardware is working VERY well with me to fix..

Just curious about the ammo. Was it fmj? Is the base exposed lead? I installed a high end 14.5" barrel 1:7 twist and it would not shoot 55 gr. fmj Lake City bullets accurately. I was getting 5 inch groups at 100 yds. Even 62 gr. fmj bullets were not that great. When I switched to 69 and 77 gr. HP bullets they shot under an inch at 100 yds.
Assuming you didn't over torque your barrel and, as mentioned your RDS is securely attached, I would try different bullets. Is it a brand new barrel?

If the target was at 25 yards I doubt it was the Ammo. Even sh*t ammo will group ok at that distance.

I agree with you. But in theory if the runout was WAY off. It could be the ammo.

My guess is still a barrell problem (crown, rifling, install)

Try pulling the RDS and shoot with irons. Eliminate that variable.

my norc 10.5 shoots about a fist size group at 100 yards off irons. i dont think the group gets any smaller at 25. its hard to control.

Gotta be the BCG. Trade me yours for my Bushmaster S/A BCG!;)

Try out some other ammo, otherwise seems like a barrel problem to me. Let us know how it pans out. Happy troubleshooting!

Thats about right for me too!!

Your groups should be much smaller than fist size at 25 yards, especially from a bench.

Did the OP check if barrel is either loose in the extension or if the barrel nut is not torqued properly?

Ok guys i wanted to be 100% sure i was answering your questions correctly so!... I started dismantling the AR and low and behold the barrel was loose at the extension (like i unthreaded it by hand!), so i checked everything else and it was all good...so i retightened the barrel extension (PITFingA) and reassembled....taking it to the range tomorrow and i will report back....i left the optics on and everything else the same so hopefully thats the issue
