10.5" ar huge groups? RESOLVED

Ok guys i wanted to be 100% sure i was answering your questions correctly so!... I started dismantling the AR and low and behold the barrel was loose at the extension (like i unthreaded it by hand!), so i checked everything else and it was all good...so i retightened the barrel extension (PITFingA) and reassembled....taking it to the range tomorrow and i will report back....i left the optics on and everything else the same so hopefully thats the issue

Fingers crossed, hope that's just it... I think when I built my DMR, after the first trip out, I came back and rechecked everything to make sure nothing moved or loosened...

Take some backup iron sights as well. Just in case that wasn't it you can swap out the red dot

the barrel extension should be pinned from factory so it doesnt come loose. at least thats what ive read.

Nice.

Is the index pin still there?

I purchased an S&J 11.5" barrel from SFRC. While installing the flash hider, torquing and removing to get proper washer for orientation, the barrel came out of the barrel extension. Might want to check yours for this flaw, hopefully it is isolated. Thankfully I never shot mine before discovering this very dangerous defect.

I have sent the barrel to S&J at their request. It arrived there Jan 31, 2013 and have not heard anything.

Uhm, if the extension is loose - send it back.

Odds are if you tightened the extension back on - the gas port will not line back up, nor will the headspace be correct (in all likleyhood).

Once the barrel extension is torqued on, the barrel index pin is set - this is drilled and inserted thru the extension into the barrel as well.

This is a factory warranty issue IMHO

That'll do it! Explains the inconsistencies. Looking forward to hearing the results of your range test.

This thread would be 200 posts long and filled with all sorts of ridiculous rhetoric if the barrel was made by a certain other Canadian manufacturer.

Some folks seem to get a pass.

I think their barrels are the only thing that people consistently rave about. Unless I've missed threads about that also. :)

Good luck with an answer. I sent my barrel back to them (at their request) at the end of Jan and they still have not replied to any emails or phone calls. My barrel extension came loose before ever being fired.

Just got an email!!!!

I guess im buying a new barrel!! And no compensation

So i ordered a chrome moly government daniel defence 12.5

THE EMAIL I RECEIVED WAS A MISTAKEN REPLY AND WAS NOT THE VIEWS OR OPINIONS OF S&J HARDWARE!!! PLEASE EXCUSE MY MISTAKE

Really? They are not either giving you a replacement or a refund?

They gave one to my friend not two weeks ago.

The reason it's loose is because they nitrided the barrel after the extension was installed. With parkerizing, it's okay to do it after installing the extension, but with nitriding it seems that the heat (and difference between the hardness of the barrel and extension) causes it to come loose.

You could try re-torquing the barrel to 150ft-lbs but it's unlikely the gas port would line up properly :/

I believe their issue (which i cant blame them for) is that even though the barrel was brand new i am the second owner of it...

While I suppose I can see it from that perspective.......barrel extensions coming loose is a known issue to them with regards to their barrels........

Perhaps talk to the original owner ? - $20 to them, may be enough.. Just a thought.

My thoughts exactly... That's piss poor customer service if I've ever seen it. As a dealer myself ( not firearm ) I couldn't imagine not warranting a known issue. Original owner or not.
