10.5" vs. 14.5" barrel

Back on topic!

Kevin, (or anyone else) do you have any charts on the muzzle velocity of the heavier ammo? Like 69, 70 and 77 gr?

Oh, and for anyone wishing to get into a really emotional debate on firearms, go post on Yahoo Answers. The misinformation on there is jaw-dropping. I once got figuratively crucified there for saying that a bullet will leave the barrel of an AR15 before the bolt starts moving rear-ward.

Any good highspeed video camera will show clearly that the bullet is gone long before the bullet exits.

I do have a chart somewhere on 77gr and 70gr ammo -- I will try to dig it up.

Here is some data from Hornady for their 5.56 NATO 75 GR BTHP T2 (part no. 8126N). I have about 600 rounds of this left. Hard to get for civilians like me in Canada.

Source is a PDF titled, "Tactical Application Police Ammunition Test Report and Application Guide" from 2008.

14.5" Colt M4A1 muzzle velocity: 2660 fps
16.0" Bushmaster, 5.56 NATO chambered: 2720 fps
20.0" Bushmaster, 5.56 NATO chambered: 2825 fps

Obviously those people don't understand the basic operation principal of auto-loading firearms. One of the real tricks is to keep the bolt locked until the bullet leaves the muzzle. Pressures have to drop to safely open a breach or many bad things will happen to cases, mechanisms and possibly shooters.

Oh well, you don't have to know anything to post an opinion or a fact on the internet.

Guys no more trolling. Its hard to read what is being said in this thread on my mobile. From what I gather wp wears a helmet and drives the short bus drunk. That is ok though as we all like him a lot

If you think he is arrogant and demeaning that is just because he is short and angry like me. So everybody get along

No saggy bloated s**t filled diapers in this thread please

OMFG THANKS. i was in eating mowing down on a sub; read this and started laughing like a big old retard. worst part i was in uniform and some little girl was so upset. " whats wrong with the army guy mommy? is he dying?" lolz! cute kid.

Wow that was an interesting read boys. I never thought a barrel length discussion could evolve into that. This site is going to be interesting.

My .02..... a 10.5 fits in a nice short bag.;)

Here is some additional data to stir the pot. ;)

Thanks for the charts, I rememeber seeing these up a couple years ago. I'll have to save them this time.

That said. Taking a look at the most destructive bullet weight, it looks like 55gr and 77gr are comparable in a 14.5" barrel. Food for thought. Granted, that makes selecting rifling twist rate more difficult.

Given that you're really only going to be effective out to 100-150 yards with either cartridge, wind drift shouldn't matter much either.

That said, the 20" barrel is the king in these charts for destructive power. So logically, 14.5" should be better than 10.5".

No worries cancer.

I posted it years ago. Since then I've had PM's requesting it, so here it is again. :D

OK, I threw my hat through the door first and nothing happened so......

Im gonna risk it.

To answer the OP, my 2 centavos....

I was a bunk mate with a 11.5" barrel AR. Other than a short sight plane I realized no big difference in it than any other .223.

One still had to qualify at 600yds even if you shot a sling shot or a blowgun:D
So not sure it will make a tremendous difference in real world use.

Im sure there was some rate of burn difference in powders due to shorter length and probably some accuracy difference also. But one could always drag out a Big Mac, C-15 or similar if warranted. :p
