10 - 7inch AR? Questions...

I currently have a 20 inch AR. My passion is to shoot steel gongs and I stopped using my AR because the rounds go right through the steel. So I use my CX4 more now. I want to start using the AR platform more and saw some great 7inch "pistols" on the questar website.

My Question will a 7inch or a 10inch AR in .223 build up the necessary pressure to puncture a steel gong at 50 meters. (Yes I only shoot 50 meters).

Also any comments on the reliability of these super short ARs? I have heard the shorter the barrel the less reliable the function.

By pressure, I'd assume you mean velocity.

Also, it's hard to say without knowing the thickness and rating of the steel. If it's 1/8" mild steel, probably. If it's 1" armor, unlikely.... :)

Shorter barrels ARE somewhat 'inherently less reliable', but can be made just as reliable as a longer one with the proper knowhow/money. A Noveske flash hider is said to do wonders for the more abrupt pressure curve of a shorty. Really, you don't get into reliability issues until you go under 10"...

Buy a LMT and you won't need that stinky Noveske!

Reliability aside, I would still use a Noveske just to cut down on the blast to people beside you at the range. It makes a hell of a difference, that's why I put it on my 11.5"

All this shorty AR talk... ack!!! My LMT 10.5" is enroute...

I bought a Bushmaster Carbon Pistol back in May and it didn't cycle properly. My guess is the gas pressure and spring were both to weak. Sent it back to the manuafacturer and it stil doesn't work. Now its with the gunsmith 5 months later. Hope RRA makes a better pistol or build your own kitty kat!

Mine all work quite well (two 11.5s, one 7.5). The blast really is something to behold if you are used to shooting 14.5-20in barrel lengths.... it isn't bad for the shooter but boy, oh boy, do your bench neighbors give you looks :D Thankfully, most of the time my neighbors are shooting shorties of their own so it is hard for them to #####.

I have yet to run into this reliability problem that so many speak of; I am actually pleasantly surprised at how well my ARs run. I had a mag issue with one particular mag but not with any of the shorties. Also, as you can see, no Noveske FHs here ;)

The only reason I have a 7.5" is that the thing is made by Mike Rock with Nickel Boron finish. i trust Mike Rock knows what he is doing.

I remember seeing these for sale over on arfcom quite a while back. They looked interesting, can't remember who was selling them, but I'm sure that they are long gone.

IIRC they were built for some group or agency that backed out of the buy.
