10 days in the Selous

I have just recently been advised that I am in error when I referred to the Wildebeest we shot as the Blue. It is properly called the Nyassaland Wildebeest, which I incorrectly thought was a color phase of the Blue, rather it is a subspecies.
 
Holy crap Boomer that pic of the lion pride put up the small hairs on my neck... and yeah the table cloth and dead Buff is a juxtaposition to say the least! Outstanding.
 
I've been thinking about goign to Africa for a number of years now, and this thread just makes me more determined to go.

Awesome pics, Boomer. Sounds liek you had a fantastic time. That is a great warthog, really cool looking, you must be pleased!:)
 
This post is for those of you who after reading this story and seeing these pictures are shaking your head and saying, - "It would be nice, but I'll never be able to do it." When I was a kid I read lots of African hunting stuff, and saw myself as a Selby or a Taylor . . . well OK maybe not a Taylor, but certainly as a Harry Selby. When I started to earn wages and realized the cost of things in the real world, I never thought I'd be able to make it happen either. The truth is that even now the cost is intimidating to a person of average means. We were only able to make it happen now because the mortgage was paid off. The fact of the matter is that if we can make it happen - then so can anyone out there who has the means to read this post! Don't give up on your dreams then find you are too old to make them happen. We're not done yet, not by a long shot. We still have to walk the Grand Canyon, visit Wilberforce Falls and the Nahanni, hunt Dall Sheep, and now return to Africa!

Way to go. Your pictures just make it that much harder for me to wait 3 more years. We (Wife and I) are booked for the Masailand Nov/2009.

And I understand about wanting to go and thinking that there is now way I can afford that. We have been saving for over 2 years now and have another 3 to go. But we started a savings account and put money into it every month just like the RRSP's.

I haven't worked all that out yet. I would certainly like a Bush Buck, Kudu, and Sable, and by the time I can go again I'll probably find room on a wall for another buff skull. I don't have a list as such to fill, but except buff or to add a Warthog or Impala for camp meat I wouldn't be shooting for duplicate trophies, and there is stuff I'm just not interested in taking. I also passed up much I was entitled to take on this trip. Much of what I am interested in is beyond what I can afford - Hippo, Lion, and Leopard so there is little point in dwelling on them. MS asked me if, given the opportunity, I would hunt elephant. I answered emphatically yes, but the point is moot. Perhaps some of the small antelope would be interesting such as Duiker, Dik-Dik, Steenbok, Sharp's Grysbok, or Klipspringer, although to me, these would be targets of opportunity rather than part of the main course.
