What do you guys recommend by way of a new purchase I'm going to make. Looking for any and all observations, experiences and comments that you feel might put me in the right direction for a new 10 ga shotgun.

Thanks much,

I'd go 3.5" 12ga any day of the week. Even my Browning Cynergy hunter has a 3.5" chamber. :)

That being said - your choices for 10g are extremely limited. Remington SP10? Browning BPS? That's all I know!

I have owned a BPS, Browning Gold and a SP10.
Stay away from the BPS. You need to be a giant to pump the thing and the stock will beat the crap out of your cheek.

The Gold is a nice gun. Never missed a beat as long as I used factory loads and kept it CLEAN. Handloads had to be made perfect or there were cycling problems.

The SP-10 is by far my favorite. Quickest pointing, easily cleaned, cycled everything I fed it. Only had to clean it at the end of season.

People will tell you there is no place for the "10" now that there is 3 1\2 "12s" I disagree.
The 3 1\2 is much nicer to shoot in a heavy 10 than a light 12. There is the extra in price, but when you think about it ammo is the least of your expense when you consider the rest of your gear.

Just my experience, not trying to start a 10 vs 12 fight.

My preference is my AYA double. Problem, with the requirement for non-toxic shot is I have two choices. Have the chokes opened up a little for use of steel shot. As tight as it patterns, I don't want to even think of touching the chokes. The second option, and the one I'll go with, is use ITX shot but it ain't cheap.

Can't let it go. The wood is too nice:p.

I,d stay away from the new sp10's there havin quality control probs i like my gold i fire nothin but the fastest hevyist hand loads thru it i've had one stoppage in 4 years.THAT was caused by too much wax over my crimp some fell into the trigger springs. Most fac loads are junk hand loaden is were its at for the 10 but rem does make hypersonic for them if ya didn't want to reload.I hunt mostly seaducks an geese now my 12's rarly see the light of day.I've never hunted big feilds over decoys but from what i see on tv an have heard from guys that do is a 20guage would be fine for 20, 35 yrd shootin.
In my opinion the biggest advantage of a 10 is the forceing cone it helps hold the pattern together farther along with the choke and i like the shorter shot string. The biggist draw back of the 10 is the guy shooting it cause alot can't judge yardage lol....

I use a universal a double goldwing sxs 10ga. It will teach you followthru if you can heave it to your shoulder. Its a dream to shoot 1 5/8oz loads and reaches way out. I started with a hnr 36" barreled single. I feel there is an advantage over the 12ga real or not I'm more confident with my 10. And the sound is so much cooler

There is an Ithaca Mag-10 semi-auto for sale in Abbottsford BC. It's not cheap by any means, however it comes with spare parts.
Ithaca shotguns are generally very good value for the money spent.
I cannot say first hand, how good or not so good this shotgun is, as I've only owned/own several M37 pump actions and one SKB O/U.

Agree. I may be wrong but from what I recall the ithaca mag 10 and rem sp-10 are the same gun. Ithaca came out with it in the early 70's and later rem bought their design from them.
The only draw back was many of the early ones didnot have choke tubes so you have to send the barrel down to Briley to have it fitted if you truely want to shoot steel properly. Some just open the full choke which is Ok but not like having the tube options

Thank you for pointing that very important fact out. It's easy to forget they were made long before steel shot was mandatory in the USA and Canada.

Cheers!

Really appreciate the comments guys! Everyone of your opinions have merit.
Side by sides are a personal preference and the pictures provided only serve to fuel my search for a new gun.
As for the effectiveness of the 10ga over any other, I prefer the field experience of others versus any type of ballistics statistic.

Thanks for the help!

I have had 5. 2 SxS that it seemed like I could not miss (lead). Many friends used these guns with good effect. I had a Win. 1887 leaver that was fun but a lead only 2 7/8 shell gun. I thought I should get a modern gun and went BPS. Couldn't hit the barn door from the inside. I got an Ithica auto & loved it, Back injury & I could not carry the heavy gun to where we shot. Try all you can,get what fits is the best advice I can offer.

Browning Gold

I like my Browning Gold a lot.

Very reliable and well built. I've run factory and reloads and have an estimated 2 - 300 rounds through it so far. Most of those were in the goose blind with lots of mud around and I've had zero malfunctions.

I take it apart and clean it at the end of each season, that's it. Not a fussy gun at all in my experience. Easy to disassemble and no harder to clean than any other gas gun I've dealt with.

Throws the hulls about 15 feet!

I have no experience with the SP-10 but I won't be looking into one anytime soon.
