Sometimes bigger is better. I use 2.75", 3" and 3.5" in 12 gauge and each does a better job than the other. A 12 gauge 3.5" OO buck (18 pellets) has a better chance of hitting a coyote than a 2.75" OO (12 pellets). Since I have started to use a 10 guage with factory loads I find that I can reach out farther than I did with the 12. I need all the help I can get and if it makes you feel more confident than go for it. I noticed an improvement in turkey hunting last season with the 10 and I just started reloading 10 gauge and can't wait to try it on turkey this spring.
