Hello:

I am in need of an education on 10 gauge shotgun shells.

I purchased a Winchester Model 1901 lever action 10 gauge many years ago (I have not fired it yet) and it came with 3 boxes of paper wrapped "Canuck" shells in the original boxes. The shells look like they were manufactured yesterday. According to the serial number the firearm was manufactured in 1910.

My question is - are the modern 10 Gauge shells the same size as these older Canucks? and if so can you use modern 10 Gauge safely in this firearm ?

I do not have any modern 10 Gauge shells to compare with myself. However my Canuck shells appear, (to me anyway), to be smaller than what they should be.

Any information you could send my way would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your time.

I definitely agree with finstr, due to the age it is more often then not a 2 7/8"s chamber due to the age, but it would be to your safety to have the chambers checked, as well as having the entire firearm inspected by a trusted Gunsmith for any aging/fatiguing of internal parts prior to putting any rounds through it...

The other 10ga loads were 2 9/16", 2 5/8", 2 7/8", and then the modern 3 1/2"; only the 2 7/8"s was the most popular in the USA for hunting until the modern 3 1/2" became the norm, there is still potentially a source of 2 7/8"s in the USA, so finding them could be a bit of a bugger... :shotgun:

I have to say though nothing is more of a whoot to shoot then a 10gauge thats for darn sure! :D
