My friend is wondering where he can pick up a 10 gauge SxS shotgun. If any of you are willing to sell for a reasonable price or know where to get one, any info would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Josh

I have a 'mint' AYA with nice wood that I'd hate to part with but in reality:redface:, I haven't used much in the last few years.

In addition, I have a few boxes of Federal Premium factory ammo, a 'bag' of Federal hulls and a couple of 'big bags' of wads for reloading. If I do decide to actually sell, considering condition, the way it patterns and extras, this isn't going to go cheap. PM me.

Say what you will but the 10 Gauge died when steel became mandatory for Waterfowl.

:(Sadly so, you're quite right. I took my AYA to a local gunsmith with the intention of having the chokes opened up to allow me to use steel. However, after remembering some of the pattern densities I've got using the old Federal Premium loads with copper plated shot etc, I, :redface:had a change of heart. I have considered some of the lead substitute alternatives available and may go that route for what little waterfowl shooting I do these days. I first considered Bismuth, which is no longer available apparently. What's taken its place is called ITX and "it ain't cheap". The last price quote I have is $190.oo for a 7lb bag. Decissions decissions. Dammed if you do and dammed if you don't but if I decide to keep the AYA, that may be the option I'll take.

For Occasional shooting you might try Environmetal's Classic Double's I think they are loading the 10 Gauge. For one or two hunts a year it might be worth it if it means keeping Ol'Betsy around.

Wait so my friend, if he bought a 10 gauge SxS he wouldn't be able to use it for hunting waterfowl? Is this because they don't offer steel shot for 10 gauge?

Sorry I am not well informed on anything 10 gauge.

Thanks again,
Josh

Sent you an explaination of my understanding of impact steel shot has on the barrels of older shotguns as well as the availability status of my AYA 10ga.

John I should have said Hevi-shot Classic doubles apprently they are not loading the 10 Gauge, I saw 10 gauge ammo advertised previously by them must not have been enough demand.

We Canadians should get after Gamebore to make a North American Run of 2 7/8 inch 10 Gauge shells.

I picked up a really nice spanish double that was opened up for steel at a local gun show a couple months back. Paid 500 for it and it shoots pretty good, cant wait to take it out next goose season. However at 37.99 for 25 rounds of winchester i doubt ill be getting much practice in :p

They are out there just takes a little looking to find a good price. A word to the wise they are ALOT heavier than a double 12, which should be obvious but nonetheless i was still surprised the first time i picked it up.

Just got word back on my inquiry on Hevi-shot for use in my AYA double. They indicate the same choke 'considerations' required for use of steel also apply to Hevi-shot. Looks like my only option without opening up the chokes is to use ITX shot. $$$$$$$. Oh well.....
