...can anyone tell me if a twenty round or ten round magazine exists for my vz-58 and if so where to purchase?. A quick search turned up no results but I think I have seen some pictures of members in here with them.
Pinned to five rounds of course...

Thx in advance,
Mad Mikey

Ya, my VZ58 from Marstar came with one. I think it would be a 10 rounder and the others that came with it would be 30 rounders. It would be more fun if we could use the full magazine capacity though but a criminal would never be able to figure out how to get full capacity mags so I guess it saves lives. Right?

I'm curious what you need them for. Doesn't it look cooler with the 30s?

...agreed the 30's look much better Elmer, I'm interested in an underfolding stock install, and I realize the stock will not deploy with standard length 30 rd. mag. in place, but after the feedback here it seems I should run far far away from them???.

Its not a big deal to just detatch the mag and fold the stock :D

...agreed Vanisle, but the rifle is for critter defense [black bear etc.] and quick deployment of stock is paramount. Folding stock is not an option right now as supply seems scarce and marstars current price [70$ I think] is more than i'll pay for a surplus stamped steel folder.

I'm not a bear defense specialist, but if those are your thoughts, go with the full stock, or with the sidefolder and lots of practice on the deployment of the stock. The underfolder is waaay slow for that. Unless, of course, if you want to hike with it already deployed.

Dr.Lector do you have any experience with the CZ side folder? Is lock up relatively solid when deployed?. How about when folded?. I think it was the pics. of your underfolder set-up that got me sweet on it!!!. From your guys info. I'm now leaning towards side folder with wolverine 5 rd. magazine, as I need a short, light, unobtrusive carry-rifle [non-restricted] for my A.T.V. and Backpacking excursions. I have a remmy 870 12G. with top folder but there is just something about this little 858 that feels right in my hands, and it's a joy to carry! Thanks again for replies...any input or opinions appreciated.

Check out vz58.net, they have a really nice polymer folder that would suit your needs!

Yes, the side folders are pretty solid, both the original czech military and the aftermarket composite.
Underfolders have that special look (at least for me), but it's slow in deployment for bear defense and other situations when you're talking about your own life.
The AK military underfolders clear the mag because they sit a little more forward.
In case you have to shoot in an emergency, the selector switch has one more position (which yours doesn't have) which makes the gun suitable to shoot from the hip, in which case you don't need stock deployed.
Take care

The 10 rounder that came with mine is all metal and works just as good as the 30 rounders.

I didn't know that there was an under folder available for the VZ58 but I like my side folding one. It didn't lock well when I first got it but I fixed that with a bit of sand paper so it would fully open and lock.

I personally would pick something different to carry for bear protection such as a short 12 gauge shotgun. But to each their own.

...all metal and reliable?...hmmm interesting. When you say they came with your rifle Elmer I'm assuming it was a marstar purchase? Are you satisfied with your 10 rounder and would you recommend it? Still on the fence over getting one and yours is first positive report I've got to go on.

Yes, it was from Marstar and came with the rifle. I haven't had any problems with it but I don't use it a lot. I use it as a stripper mag and now and then at the range just plinking. Never had a problem with it.

I can put up a picture of this all metal mag if you want.

If you look closely at the short mags that are being sold, they all appear to be just full length ones that have been modified. The ones I've seen are a different shade of gray than all the 5/30s which leads me to believe that they have been repainted afterwards. I have shorted a few myself - real PITA but cheaper than buying a short one. If you attempt to do your own, practice a couple times on the bottom "waste" metal - don't want to wreck a mag! You'll notice they are made of some lightweight alloy that work hardens easily. When making the new bottom "tabs" to retain the base-plate, heat the area quite hot first (with torch) and let cool slowly. This seems to soften the metal a little, allowing it to bend without cracking.
