If anyone is interested in Bullet casting and wanted to make their own melting pot. This is the one I just finished. I know most will steal their wife's stock pot but here is a alternative. DO Know there are Dangers involved in cutting propane tanks or anything with volatile fluids/gases. Also do wear protective gear, Face Shield, Gloves, Respirator etc. etc. etc. cou:

I bought a cheap walmart pot to melt WW. 15$. And an outdoor propane burner.

I soldered 2 5/8 iron bars on top to support the weight of the lead pot. No issues.

I bought a stainless steel pot at the local thrift store. No lid, $1. Not worth putting a bunch of effort in, for $1.

Nice looking project! Hope it works well for you!

Cheers

Very nice.

What did you use to cut the tank with?

I've got a 20 lb tank I picked up to do this with, specifically when melting loose wheelweights down to pour them into more usable ingots.

I've got a old 5# propane tank sitting around here somewhere. I might do another just for fun when I find it. I like making things regardless of the time and $$$ I used a angle grinder and a cutting disk. Finished it with a flap wheel and painted it with Armor Coat High heat BBQ paint. It's supposed to be good to 1200*F I'll be surprised if it doesn't burn off though.

A angle grinder with a cutting wheel will cut through easily, make sure you rinse the tank out with water good before letting the sparks fly.

good to go ya might want to tell people the procedure for cutting a tank. Don't want anybody hurting themselves.

But at the same time why deprive darwin from someone who would attempt to cut a propane tank with any amount of gas left inside and/or with the shutoff removed from the tank before hand and washed out with water or nitrogen or co2?

Very NICE pot - Good JOB ! :D RJ

I have cut up several tanks in my time. All without incident... One I cut on a bandsaw. That wasn't quick and easy as I had to turn the tank a few times to get it cut the whole way around. I cut 2 with a blowtorch. BUT before I cut it, I took the valves, pressure release, and tank gauges off, and turned it upside down for over a week and then filled and drained water a few times before I cut it. There were no issues.
I have not personally used a propane tank as a lead melting pot. I just use a $8 stainless pail from princess auto.

If you have a MIG or TIG welding setup, take the valve off the propane tank, stick the end of the hose into the hole and turn on the gas so it flows gently. You don't want to blast it in, as if you were using a blow gun to blast away cuttings....
If I remember correctly, argon is heavier than air, so you want to have the tank upright. A CO2 mix likely will be heavier as well, but you should check.

if you have either welder i would suggest you likely would have an air compressor which would work just as good and be alot cheaper :)

even then if you remove the valve i highly doubt there would be enough gas left to do much of anything, i would likely stick my blowtorch in and light it for fun.

Definitely not! The reason for either Argon or a MIG mix such as C-25 (75%AR + 25% CO) is that they are inert. Compressed air still contains 21% oxygen.
BE SAFE!!Purge the cylinder!!!!

No. There is enough liquid propane soaked into the metal(porous metal) to be saturated for a very long time and cause an ignition. I have had this happen for a school project. Also I am propane certified at my current place of employment. Take valve off after being empty completely. ( tanks newer than 1994 have an opd valve) won't let gas out without a fitting attached. And purge it very well with water and argon.
