I have a stag 10 in 308 for hunting. I size I use xcr mags which are designed for pistols they are 10 round mags. My question is are there any federal or provincial (Saskatchewan) regulations that limit the use of these mags specifically while hunting. I have looked I can only find references to the general 5 round restriction for semi automatic rifles. Since these are pistol mags the general restriction doesn't apply but does it still apply while hunting?

Don't the hunting regs state that only shotguns have to be plugged to 2 in the mag one in the chamber while hunting? The way I read it they didn't really write it forseeing pistol magazines for semi auto centerfire rifles assuming the 5 limit on semi auto centerfire rifles would be a catch all.

Your provincial hunting regs will provide the answer to this, in BC the only mag capacity restrictions we have are for shotguns. Specifically for hunting with shot and not for slugs, using shot the tube can’t hold more than 2 shells. For slugs you don’t have to plug the tube, the hunting synopsis is very clear on this and nowhere else in it does it mention and mag restrictions while hunting. Fed mag limits are observed, so in BC hunting with a pistol mag in a semi auto would be fine.
Generally speaking the regs tell you what you can’t do, so I doubt you’ll find anything written saying 10 pistol mags in a semi auto centre fire gun is legal.

??? So if i hunt in a place where semi autos arent allowed, since both semi autos and hunting rifles use a BOLT. I cant use a bolt action either cause its part of a semi???? What kind of sorcery is this
Hunting regulations supersede firearms regulations.
Get caught with a 10 round pistol mag may not get you a fine when target shooting, but it will when hunting. Unless the mags are blocked. Who is to say you don’t have 10 in the mag hunting?

That is my question I have not found anything in the hunting regulations that specifically mentions centerfire semi automatic restrictions.

In Ontario you can hunt with a 100 round mag, if it were a legal magazine, no restriction outside of shotgun here.
I was told the 5rd rule back when I started out too, the only problem is that there is no rule, 10rd enfield mags are totally legal in Ontario, Alberta may be different.

This means that what we can do under the BC wildlife act will not necessarily be the same in any other province. In fact we know this is the case.
British Columbia defaults to the firearms act for nearly all firearms related hunting applications except for shotguns as Butcherbill pointed out.
There are absolutely no regulations in the BC wildlife act for magazines in hunting rifles, centerfire or rimfire.... so I'll repeat..... the firearms act applies.
This means there is no violation a Conservation Officer can charge you with if you are following the firearms act.
Using a 10 round Pistol mag in a centerfire rifle ….. for any lawful purpose, which includes hunting..... is not currently a violation of the firearms act..... again.... we "know" this is the case.

Right you are, I looked into this when all I could find for my .223 chassis build were the MDT 10 round mags, didn't really want to drill and rivet one. Of course that was a bolt gun, but I don't see how a semi would be any different.
