Watched Army of Darkness last night with my daughters (talk about huge laughs!), and it got my 10 year old all excited about her new BOOMSTICK. Previously she'd been hunting squirrels and chukars with a single shot Chiappa double badger (just the bottom .410 barrel), but so her gun would be more like dad's over under she was wanting a gun that had 2 shotgun shots instead of just the one. How does Dad say no to that??!?! Thus a couple of weeks ago I sold the double badgers and got a Stoeger/IGA .410 coach gun that I then cut 3 inches out of the stock such that it now sports an 11 inch LOP.

The coach gun was about three quarters of a pound heavier than her previous gun, so initially as we practiced gun mount in the basement she was less than thrilled, and my heart sank as her enthusiasm waned. But then last night we watched Army of Darkness together and she was right away on me to go try out her new gun. I asked her if she wanted to go shoot some squirrels (what we have been doing), or if she would like to try for the first time aerial targets at the sporting clay range. When I told her that's where all her mother's clay shooting trophies had come from, she was on it like white on rice.

To be honest, I was a little apprehensive - while hunting I've been encouraging a squatting stance and coached her to never shoot unless she's steady and certain. Not quite the approach that was likely to have her find success on the clay range!

To hopefully help with frustration & disappointment, I told her that even if she did not hit anything the trip would be a success because she got to try out her new gun doing something she'd never done before. She pushed me for some measurement of success and I tried for "1 clay hit this morning means you're a champ!". Her response was that "oh duh, dad! 1 clay hit would be, like, something random, and everyone will just know I'm a total loser!"

f:P:2:

Uh oh!

So we settled on the following: 5 clays hit would be a bronze medal performance, 10 clays smashed would be a silver medal performance, and 15 clays crushed would be the gold medal equivalent. Well, that cast her determination in stone, and about 95 shells later she broke her 15th clay to great cheers. I was lucky enough to catch it on my iPhone and though some here might get a kick out of it too. Now my problem is that she is not buying my position that the medals were just metaphorical...she is literally expecting her gold medal. Oops!

The big bonus to the extra weight in the new gun is that her little 60 lb frame is pushed around much less than when she was shooting her double badger - whereas previously she was ready to stop after 25 to 30 shells, she went more than 100 rounds today and the limiting factor was arm fatigue.

Anyway, hope you get half as much of a kick as I did from watching my little girl smash her first clays.

Cheers,

Brobee

Awesome swing and follow through, kept her head on the stock like you're supposed to!! Atta girl!! She's a natural. She destroyed that target, hahaha, love it!! If half my hunting partners could do that we'd pile some geese up quick!!

Good for you both! Always good having kids learn a new skill that can build self confidence and open doors down the road.
As for the "gold medal", go to the second hand store. The local one here always has a rack of medals and a shelf of trophies. Remove what you don't like, glue gun what you want, spray paint it gold and you're done. The Golden Clay Award has a good sound to it (and it's shaped like a medal too) .;)

Awesome Brobee! I've always felt that hooking a kid on the outdoors requires 3 things of an adult:

Teach them to catch a fish;
Teach them to hit a target with a rifle (I like balloons on a 25m board with a .22);
Teach them to hit a clay in the air.

I suspect your daughter is likely already a menace to fish and balloons (or better) alike, so you've scored the trifecta.

As to the medal, go get her a 1/10oz Canadian Maple Leaf coin. Maybe for Christmas, or an upcoming birthday?

Great start. I started my son at 8 years old and he's still shooting with me regularly at 28 (of course he usually outshoots me now).

Right on, this is good. There were 2 kids at the range last Sunday, a young girl about the same age as your daughter shooting .22 rifle and an even younger boy. I don't know what or even if he was shooting as his party was in the other gallery. But both of them had big smiles.

So next up in our movie watching saga was Terminator II. She liked Sara Connor's pump gun, how's that for a good excuse for Brobee to sell some stuff and then go gun shopping?

Here's the video from her second range session:

Someone on another forum asked if she gave lessons - when I showed her that post her eyes lit up like Christmas - she loved the idea of giving lessons. I told her she needs to learn a bit more first and she took the bait for another trip to the range but despite "needing to learn a bit", she could not resist spouting off to the camera about how she was going to give lessons.... :rolleyes: I verbaled her after for turning around before opening the action of the gun.

When I first brought home the 870 compact junior it was quite a bit lighter than her coach gun - I was worried that it would beat her up a bit so I machined a brass insert that goes down the stock hole and brings the weight up to about that of her coach gun.

She LOVED the pump action, and we had a total gas. She broke about half of what she shot at, and was thrilled that her total hit count was 33 - more than double the 15 of her first outing. Pretty tuckered after about 70 clays, we then hit the clubhouse to share a pop and some chips before driving home as the sun set. What a great afternoon.

Cheers, and thanks for the encouragement.
