So he has been shooting .22 since he was 5.
Built him a short stocked 6mm that he has been shooting for a year and a half. Working up in powder charges slowly. Now at full charge, 80 grain TTSX @ 3400FPS.
We went out for youth season. Had him on 4 bucks but we couldn't get it to work out. Too far, too spooked, grass or trees in the way, etc...
Didn't want to rush it or have his first be a bad experience.
So I shot a bear and made sausage out of him. He helped me field dress it and make the sausage.

We went out again. Working some private property that I have access to. I went out the night before, to set up my blind near a gulley that the deer use to access an irrigated field. Took my bow and belly crawled to within 77m of 2 bucks. Still 17m too far.
We went out around 4 in the afternoon and watched the does come in.

The around 6pm, a 2x3 buck appeared 380m across the field. We made a plan to stalk the deer and get closer. We got within 190m of the deer who had noticed us by then.
I got my son set up on the bipod, prone, like we had practised at the range so many times before. I talked him through the shot, while training my own crosshairs on the deer. He squeezed the trigger and the buck dropped after taking 5 wobbly steps. Perfect!!!
He's just 10 and this is his first season and what a way to start his hunting career!! I was a super proud papa and he was a super pumped little guy.
Great time and memories...

Congrats to your boy Curt. Better buck than my first one today. LOL

Wish my dad had taken me out when I was young.....looks like you got a lifetime hunting partner.

Thanks guys. My fondest memories are of hunting, fishing and learning bushcraft with my dad. I hold those memories close to my heart and I'm sure my son will too. There is no better feeling as a dad to be able to impart knowledge and a love of the bush to his kids. It was a special day that I will remember all of my days thats for sure.

Thanks Darren, G was super pumped. Took about 2 hours for the adrenaline to wear off.
Richard, size doesn't matter. You can't eat antlers....
