From the NRA press release:

Rounding out the list of pro-gun provisions is section 1087, which restores authorization to the Secretary of Defense to transfer to the Civilian Marksmanship Program surplus M1911 and M1911A1 .45 ACP pistols for sale to the public. The component of the CMP that dispenses the pistols would be required to obtain a federal firearms license and abide by all requirements of the Gun Control Act pertaining to licensed sales and transfers. Currently, the military has some 100,000 such pistols that it no longer needs and that are being stored as taxpayer expense. These historically-significant firearms can now be transferred to law-abiding owners at a net gain to the government’s heavily-indebted balance sheet.

Could we be seeing some of them up north?

Didn't they send 10,000 Browning Hi Powers to the smelters not long ago? Or was it something along those lines in the works or being discussed?

Next question, can irunguns bring some of those into Canada and pass any savings to us????

The Civilian Marksmanship Program, CMP were to be authorized to sell them to qualified American citizens through the program, only. I believe that this has not happened yet as the Bill authorizing the importation has not gone forward as of yet.

Only after being sold through the CMP program to qualified persons can they be re-sold & imported into Canada. Whether or not the ATFE would allow authorized & permitted export is another matter...

An inventory of 100K pistols being absorbed in a country of over 300 million people is but a mere drop in the proverbial bucket.

Just sayin'. ;)

NAA.

At least firearms paid for by the U.S. taxpayer will go back to the taxpayer....unlike Canada . But I suspect most of those guns will be heavily picked over before they even get to the public....

I thought in Canada the law stated the military/police had to destroy their firearms when they were no longer serviceable for use. Couldn't sell them to the public?

I suspect if any of these come into Canada there will be no savings. If they are decent condition/correct pistols, they will be sold as such by CMP. They aren't a war time gov't arsenal that is cleaning firearms to get them back in the field for a war effort, they are a company that is aware of collectibility and sorts firearms accordingly. They have a system of different grades/prices. If you want an economical USGI mixmaster, the CMP sales might be right up your alley. If you want a good condition all original Colt/Rand/Ithaca/etc you will pay fair market value just as you would anywhere else. Of course that is if any of them migrate north of the border.

Neat stuff, hopefully we see a few come our way. I wonder if I can trade a diemaco upper for one of these to someone in the us. :)

Laugh2
You're kidding right ?

I'm sure IRUNGUNS would probably secure a bunch and bring them up here. Sure they may be in fair grade and just pure shooters, but I think there's a bunch of us out there missing an original GI 1911 that would like to have one, regardless of the condition.

I think the ones that have seen action are actually probably more interesting than the newer ones which would be auctioned off first. These pistols have 70 years of military history on them, which would make any gun nut want one :)
