currently own the vari x II 2-7x33 which sits on a 35 Whelen..... oops, I mean on THE Whelen.



not sure im game to take it off.... although this gun will be the do it all bar "long" stuff past 300m and maybe even a 250m gun depending which bullet weight I end up using as it seems trajectory varies quite a lot from lighter end to the heavier end of options

The eye relief and parallax on the ultralight series is extremely finicky and not appropriate for light or heavy recoiling rifles. Especially when there are equivalents in the same brand, like those I suggested.

The 6x36, 2-7x33 and 2.5-8x are my favourite light scopes by far. I've owned 3 ultralights; they are sturdy and fine but the eye relief and parallax issues aren't worth saving an oz.

If your rifle was mine if toss a 6x36 on it and go kill stuff with a very light and capable rig! I would like to own a Montana in .308 one day methinks.
 
The VX-3 2.5-8 will look good on there. On the other hand, for one more inch and one more ounce a 3.5-10 also looks pretty good on there. Or get this, for the same inch and 1 1/2 ounces a 4.5-14 x 40 works just fine too. Come to think of it, currently all 5 of my Kimbers are wearing 4.5-14 Leupolds, 3 VX-3s and 2 VX3 LR side focus. One is supposed to have a 3.5-10, but I swapped it for the 14 power recently to do a bit more load development and can't think of any good reason to change it back. They all fit in low rings.

The FXII 6x36 with the LR reticle is my new favorite LW scope for the majority of my hunting rifles. I have used many, many Leupold scopes over the years and have had many favorites. I like the simplicity of this scope and have proven it works well on many rifles in different cartridges out to 500 yards. The gongs hanging here or the dead animals I have taken using this scope on don't lie.

These all now wear a FXII 6x36 LR reticle.




And just to stir the pot WhelanLad, ditch the Talley LW rings and get something worth having on a decent rifle. The weight savings aren't worth it. I have used many on many different rifles, will never again. I could tell you why but it isn't worth arguing with the hoards of internet shooting experts.
 
the vx3 2.5-8x36 looks worth saving for , lightweight too an if not I doubt much weight too it as you say above.

How do you find the LR reticle? I have the regular duplex reticle 6x36mm. Am I missing much with a typical .308/.30-06?

What do you mean, how do I find it? I really like it! 100-500 yards, once dialed in for most common cartridges, point and shoot. The main reason why I like it so much is dial it in, practice, and go kill stuff. Very simple.

hopefully I have a buyer for my 308 t3, which he doesn't want the scope, burris fullfield.

so what that means is the Whelen can wear the Burris and he loopy 2-7 will go on the Kimber!

I mean 'do the extra dots help you with bullet drop in the real world or am I just as well off with the standard duplex'? I could dial in the .30-06 for MPBR but perhaps the LR reticle would be a worthwhile upgrade-?

I love the LR duplex on my rifles. Once you get it all figured out, it's simple to use and I find the reticle uncluttered like the B&C version.

That sums it up well. No clutter, simple to use and IMO better than the standard duplex. If set up right, there is no guessing, point, shoot, dead out to 500 yards. With practice of course.
 
So its not long now until il have this thing in my hands an on my range!

I sold my Ute, so I will soon have the cash to pay out what I owe and have it here!


I think I am going to use 140gr projectiles first up! I love my 270 so much, I realise it wont perform exactly like that but if I can get it close...im happy

My neighbour ended up with a Montana in 280AI yesterday. Set it up for him tonight.

Will hit the bench in the AM if the wind backs off a bit. Have some factory loads to try, will be waiting a few days for dies.
 
I know this is a few weeks old, plus it doesn't involve Savages or Boyds stocks slapped on any junk. But curious how it worked out for you Whelanlad?

ive somewhat relocated for North Australia, for work but in mean time the Kimber is still sitting in the Dealers safe, im awaiting a paycheck to throw onto it an get it.

Id be sure to post up some Photos and load development progress once Ive got it.

Im in a real pickle too, as there is quite alot of Wild Dogs up here and also the Deer herds are classed as Pest, which is quite a difference from down South!!


Confirmation though is Talley lightweights and Leupold 2-7x 33 will be the setup ill begin with on my lightweight rifle journey


having trouble containing excitement and just want it Yesterday haha
