Hey all my local club has an under utilized 100 meter range. I'd like to start Somethin this spring for rimfires. I'm looking for ideas that are compliant with Ontario regulations. We can't shoot steel. Best group gets old quick for most so I ask here what would interest you enough to come out to a rimfire meet regularly?

Reactive targets of some type. Attracts all ages, can still be challenging, but instant feedback is always entertaining/fun.

why is there any issues with steel and rimfires at 100m anyway?

Someone at some range caught some slag and sued so no steel targets in Ontario

Care to clarify? Lots of ranges in Ontario use steel so long as its placed in a shroud to prevent splatter.

All IPSC matches usually include some sort of poppers/plates.

Reactive targets are your best bet. Check out NRL22 and the matches they post monthly (for free). Just build some portable shrouds and you can run full-on matches that are designed to only need a 100m range

100 meter/yards presents some interesting challenges in wind, rain and sun and we shoot in three categories: Target Rifle using an 8" bull; Unlimited and sporting rifle using CGN challenge target (3 - 10 shot targets for score). 60 rounds in 30 minutes. Some best groups are under 0.7" in the Unlimited but there have been some sporting rifle groups under 1.0". Sporting rifle is shot off a bipod.
The target and best group to date at 100 meters was shot under windy conditions over wind flags.

Trying to encourage more target rifle and starting a youth event

That's what I was told by the cfo and it's written in our range approval no steel in any area where a bullet may strike. No steel targets and no exploding targets
We are only approved to shoot from a bench thru a port hole under 2 baffles for our 100 m range. We also have a 25 m range but cannot shot from or place targets between the distances. I did not write it but must follow it for the preservation of our range

I have been the Range Operator of 9 Ranges in Southern Ontario for 10 years . I have read the
"Range Design & Construction Guidelines " book from the Canadian Firearms Centre over these 10 years.
I work closely with the CFO Office to open Ranges & modify them as well . We use steel targets regularly .
Steel targets ( hard targets as they say) are directly talked about in the Guidelines , using the correct Shrouding.

I think you need to get a copy of the Guidelines from the CFO Office & talk to them about using steel again.

^ This.

I am the Chief Range Officer at my range in Ontario and deal with the CFO Range inspectors. As stated, steel is explicitly discussed in the Range Construction guidelines. My range currently uses shrouded reactive steel targets in its rimfire, rifle and pistol ranges. These include duelling trees, plates and resetable hanging targets.

A discussion by your club officials with the CFO would be beneficial. I have found them very open to working with my club to show us how we could get things done within the guidelines.
