So I'm planning to buy a hunting rifle to celebrate the demise of the long gun registry. I'm going to be using it mostly in Ontario, for deer, bear, and moose. I'm budgeting $1-1.5K for the scope. I'm leaning towards light and very simple; no gimmicky reticles, reasonable magnification, no oversized objectives. Anybody care to make some recommendations?

Why so much money? With the caliber, intended use and landscape, you don't need more that 10x magnification, and you want to be at no more than 3x on bottom end.
Most shooting will be within 30-150 meters.
You can get a nice scope for well under $500.

Swarovski Z3 3-10x42,light,clear, and bright.

Stubblejumper I have a 2.5 to 10 Leupold LPS I thought it was a pretty good clear sharp scope.
But you are right, shot a friends Swarovski 2.5 to 15x its by far the best scope I have every used absolutly stunning clear and sharp
manitou

Another +1 for the Swarovski. I had a Z3 3-9 and it was fantastic. If you're looking for a place to buy, Plain Sight Solutions is where I got mine, and they were great to deal with.

i once heard it said that without good optics all a rifle is is an expensive club. that said zeiss or 3x9 3200 bushnell elite and a new rifle for back up

Why so much money? Because I'm looking for more than just a "nice" scope; I'm aiming to put together a never-going-to-need-or-want-to-replace-it hunting rig. I'm aiming for "my godson will be thrilled when he inherits it". I'm hoping to hit or slightly pass the knee of the quality/price ratio curve.

That's why :).

Thanks for the recommendations, gentlemen. Appreciate it. Please keep them coming.

Swarovski has some excellent deals on Z3 and Z5 rifle scopes. I carry a wide selection of Swaro, Zeiss, Schmidt Bender, Leica, Kahles...check out my listings in my subforum in the Optics Specialists dealer area.

Get a scope that works for the rifle and isn't ridiculously large or high. Eschew the 50 and 56mm objectives and instead but somethign that is rugged, well built, high quality and apropriate. No need for 30mm tubes, 6x zoom range or turrets. It's going on a 30-06. You didn't mention what kind of rifle you're putting it on but in my opinion putting a giant heavy scope on a M70 Featherweight woudl be stupid. AS would puttign a Bushnell on a Cooper. If what you're dealing with is a good to very good factory rifle then you should go with a good to very good scope.

A Leupold 3.5-10x with a 40mm objective is as much scope as I would put on a 30-06 (any 30-06) but it's your BBQ.

That's pretty much the direction I'm heading in. A sane scope for a hunting rifle that's going to be carried lots, and is unlikely to be used outside of 300 yards, although I'd like that capability.

I like a large objective that lets lots of light in.

Reason being most of my hunting as at first legal shooting light, or last.

The game is bedded down in the day usually, and unless your "beating bush" to spook something out, I dont really encounter as much game during daylight.

Its nicer to glass a field with something that illuminates well, while your waiting for game to leave the fields or come out for their evening feed. I understand for somethng your packing up hills and mountains all day that you would prefer to be minimalistic though.
