Here is an article written by Mysticplayer a board member here. Read this. There is a lot to learn about shooting the 223 long distance, but it can be done. There is a lot to learn though. It is all about fast twist barrels and heavy, high BC bullets and proper optics.

Read this and if you have anymore questions ask away or use the search function.

You will.

Understand that every deficiency in terms of barrel accuracy, load consistency and scope repeatability will be greatly amplified at 1000. Add to that the ability to read conditions and compensate for them.

In other words, if you can get a 1" group at 100 meters, under perfect (and I mean PERFECT) conditions, you would be looking at a group close to 11 inches in size. In reality, it will likely be much bigger.

Milking big performance from small cartridges is terrific fun, I love it. I would just say that becoming an accomplished shooter at 100, 200 and 300M is no easy task, but it pays hugely when you do want to stretch out.

Component wise, match bullets with high ballistic coefficients are the key to bucking wind.

Grab any fast twist 223 Savage. Load up 75gr Bergers or AMax VLD's over Varget, lit by a CCI 400, BR4 or 450 primer in prepped brass (I prefer Win but most anything will do), and have at it.

You will not be winning any matches with it but you can easily make the trip to 1000yds and beyond. The 9 twist will do just fine with the 62gr FMJ's too for dirt cheap practise.

Plinking LR with min of small boulder accuracy is way too much fun...

PS just have that action properly bedded as this will help alot with consistency.

The Canadian championships F class F/F 308 & 223 caliber rifles at Connaught Ranges in Aug was won by Jim Thompson shooting a 223 rem I believe he was shooting 80gr Sierra's and did very well at 1000 yards.

You dont even really need fast twist barrel to meet this goal. For fun I wanted to try and get 50 grain vmax bullets out of my stock remington rifle out to 1000 yards.

So far I have had sucess out to 600 yards shooting about 1.5 MOA in windy conditions 10-15 mph wind.

I am waiting for the crops to be harvested so I can go try this same load at 800 yards... is all the current property we have will allow for.

You only realize the scope of what your trying to accomplish when you have to walk downrange to check your groups... I was fireing 10 shot groups at 600 all hitting my target. Which was 2 legal size papers side by side.

I cant wait to buy one of these fast twist guns and play with heavy bullets I am a remington man and they dont make anything fast twist which is dissapointing to say the least... savage is about the only one that makes fast twist out of the box.

msg.drew,
Remington's VTR and XCR both have 1 in 9 twist barrels, it is just to bad that the VTR only has a 22" triangle barrel and the XCR is $1400. That is why I went with a savage.

you might have a bit more fun with a cal like the 6.5x284 shooting 1000m + but getting hits with the .223 is pretty cool.
good luck

Yep, there are a plethora of cartridges far better suited to long-distance shooting, but it CAN be done with a 223. It all boils down to how well the gun performs at short range first.

The UK matches are showing how well 180 grain VLD 7mm bullets work in that game. A straight shooting, fast-flying 7mm is the ticket, but you're gonna learn to live with recoil. For me, the 6BR still has everything I want and need for 1000M shooting and you can shoot one all day long.

Obtunded, what about the 7mmBR? Could utilize the high B.C. bullets or is there not enough velocity to fire the heavier 7mm bullets to 1000yds?

what is a fast twist barrel?

More revolutions per foot of barrel travel.

A fast twist would be a 1 in 8 twist. A slow(er) twist would be a 1 in 12. Fast and slow is also relative to the SAAMI standard twist used by gun makers.

DH, 7BR is too slow to be of much benefit in the F class game. Has been used in big bore silhouette but that is a completely different 'animal'.

The UK shooters were using hotrodded/improved 284 Wins and 180gr Bergers. The key is getting them as close to 3000fps without knocking yourself silly or cooking your barrel.

Several top F class shooters in the US have tried this combo but have given up as the beating didn't improve their scores.

However, several big events in the US have been won by the 7mm this season so at distances beyond 800yds or in high wind environment, dealing with the beating might be in order.....YUCK.

Jerry's right. a 7BR is far far too underpowered for pushing a 180 bullet to functional velocity. The 284 with new powders, 7-300 WSM, 284 Shehane are what are needed. I'd like to know what sort of velocities one can get with a 280 or 280AI with 180's. I know of nobody using them.

I am running a 7MM WSM with a 30" 1 in 9 Liljia barrel, I am shooting 180 gr Berger VLD's at 3000 fps and I have great results out to a 1000m and beyond. A few of my shooting buddy's are running 6.5x284 and I have a 243 and the 7MM needs' less windage adjustment and out performs the 6.5x284 and the 243. Like Obtunded said the 7MM has alot more recoil. My gun weighs between 18 and 20 pounds has a 1" recoil pad and a muzzle break so the recoil is less then my 243.

I have....

I came up with a wildcat a few years back when I was looking at options for F(Open). I designed the 7 Mystic. It is the 280AI with the shoulder moved to headspace like a 7RM. The shoulder is forward of the reg. 280AI but not as severe as the GIBBS. This was a byproduct of the 'no magnum' rule that doesn't seem to be in effect these days.

You end up with case capacity near identical to the 7RSAUM. Running some warmer loads, I pushed 180gr Bergers to 2850fps in a 24" Shilen barrel. I would expect to be near 3000fps in a 30" pipe.

162gr Amax went 2925fps in the shorter tube. I ran H4831SC. Pressures were not crazy hot as I retired the barrel still with my orig batch of brass.

If I were to compete with a 7mm, this would be my case as it is materially larger then the 284 and improved versions. Based off the 30-06 case, brass is a no brainer vs some short magnums.

There is definitely something to be said for these 180's at 1000m. They just don't get bounced around as much as my 6.5 Mystic at that distance. I was able to tune out the vertical so the long skinny case burns just fine.

The rifle had a brake and was 10lbs. Don't think it would be as much fun as the 6.5 to shoot over our long relays but if I were to compete in matches out to 1200yds, definitely worth a think.

Unless someone comes out with 155gr VLD's in a 6.5 and a BC of over 0.68.
