For what purpose? Just plinking? Unless you're competing in a discipline that *requires* the use of a 308, I'd avoid it; there are much much better thousand yard cartridges.

The 223 with VLD's can meet or exceed 308 ballistics at 1000, and is much cheaper to shoot. The 243, 260, 6.5-284 and a whack of others handily beat 308 ballistics, and virtually any magnum will easily get the job done

My apologies, but I have no idea what VLD's is. I have yet to see the .223 that can meet, nevermind exceed .308 ballistics. Please advise.

Not knowing what VLD (Very Low Drag) means could be the reason you have not seen a .223 bullet that will meet or exceed .308 ballistics.

Shiloh or C. Sharps long range rifle in 44/90 Sharps BN, 34" Barrel, MVA Soule, long range tang sight, MVA front sight w/spirit level and windage adj.,probably a model '74 or even better a model '77.

VLD's mean are made by Berger. They stand for Very Low Drag, they are basically high BC bullets, here's some examples:

22 cal 75 gr Match VLD BC: 0.447

22 cal 80 gr Match VLD BC: 0.471

Here is my idea of a 1000yds rifle.
308 for starters, because it is accurate and barrel life is good.
Easy to reload and would like to see a 223 beating 154Scenars at 2900fps.

And for those who think that 308 is not enought, get a switch barrel system with a more efficient caliber.

Here is my rifle in 308 and the second barrel is in 260AI, I also have the bolt for a WSM caliber

10rnds at 200yds in my first load development

I've used the 308, 223, 6.5WSM, 6mmBR, all are great.
it depends on the bullet and the barrel.

To say a 308 is not as good at 1,000 is not an accurate statement , in fact I know several World class shooters that still use it in Fclass, there were several in the World's last year.

Unlimited class - 338 or 30 cal boomer

Limited class - 6.5 or 7 magnum

F(O) - 6.5 Mystic

F(F) - I like the 223 but we will see how it does at 1000m.

General LR plinking, the 223, 6BR, 6 Mystic and 6.5 Mystic are nice.

So if you could have any set up you wanted to shoot 1000 yards accuratly what would be your choice of rifle? caliber? scope? barrel twist?

120mm smooth bore Rhinemetal Cannon, firing Depleted Uranium fin stabilized discarding sabot ammunition.

However... since I assume you mean rifles, I would have a Surgeon Action on a Robertson Master Class stock, #17 Krieger Barrel, Jewell BR Trigger, Nightforce 8-32X56 BR scope, Ken Farrell rings and firing 338 Lapua Magnum ammo, all built by Mick McPhee or Dennis Sorenson

Sorry to hijack your thread.
Why not a .50cal. I am new to all of this so I'm not sure. I assume its only a hypothetical question so why not.
Apart from being expensive and getting ammo is a problem why not .50cal?

I know squat about shooting long either, but the question was - 1000 yards accurately

The .50 is not really that accurate. It was developed to destroy targets at long range. Not precision shooting.

2 cents:)
I think the precision .50's that are made are accurate, but there is a whole other problem with them besides cost - a decent place to shoot them.

To utilize a .50, for anything inside 1,000 would be a waste of powder IMO.
Many ranges don't allow them, so you would have to have private property to shoot it on.....

Here is a link for the rifle I use for 1000 yards shooting. Being a Target Rifle shooter limits your choice of caliber to .223 or .308. Bullet weight is limited to max 156 gr. The rifle wears a 30 in 1:13 now but will be re-barreled soon with a 1:12 Bartlein. Scope? What the hell would I do with a scope? Iron sights rule:dancingbanana:

To shoot 1000 yards in Canada the 223 & 308 have classes to shoot, I shot a little at Connaught last year with a .223 in a Rem Police .223 using 75gr Match hornadys it does it but not as well as the .308, but like other members say there are many better catridges. The 65-284 is a very popular one but barrel lenght is very short 1000 to 1200 rounds. My brother has one in the building mode now 40xb action 30" Hart barrel, robertson stock in .223 chamber is going to be long to seat out 80gr sierra's max to be able to get more powder, should be able to work very well at 1000 yards. but for a light class F gun I would build it in a .284 very good bullets with high BC and reasonable recoil,
very good read on this here

But the .223 is very economical ( in my area N540 powder is $39.00 lb)to shoot and is capable of giving good result, and enjoyable to shoot.
