1000 yards!

You will have issues past 800, the bullet will tumble and become unpredictable. The 6xc out to 1800 is not that had as the bullet won't have stability issues going transonic... most bullets dont. The 168 does!
 
OK I went out and bought some Hornady 178gr HPBT match and loaded them into Winchesters with Federal 210 BR primers and 43.5gr Varget! Im hoping they do the trick! Has anybody ever used this load before?
 
When I was firing at 800 metres with a C3 I never experienced tumbling bullets on the targets.We were using match 7.62 ammo but I don't remember what the bullet weight was. It was in the late 70's at Heals range on the Island
 
I use:

175gr SMK
Lapua brass
Fed 210M
over 44.5grs of Varget

I've taken this load out 1400 yards out of a 24" 1 in 10. Haven't shot for groups but have nailed a ten inch gong a few times. The 175's seem easy to load for and work very well for me. The quest to a grand is great fun! Go out, shoot, have fun, and learn from your misses.

That's a decent load - not too hot and in fact with Win brass I'd have gone 1/2 grain higher and I think you will find this cartridge will be superior to your 168 loading for sure.
 
OP, great job working up to that distance. Its a ton of fun. I've done quite a bit of shooting out to 6 or 700 yards and a bit of 1000yrd shooting. It can be challenging but you seem like you've got a good rig.

A point of interest that may ease your worry about it being "so far". My 11 year old brother lay down behind my friends 6.5x55 swede mauser that he'd tuned up and on the first shot made a 950 yard shot on a human torso target. :D It ain't thaaaat far ;)

Looking forward to hearing your results and load, cause i'm working up my own 308 to that distance with a load of 155amax and 46.5 of varget.

There are so many other factors which decide whether or not a .308 bullet will remain supersonic past 800 yds.

These are just some of my 175gr .308 SMK and 178gr Amax bullets collected from my 1000+ yd area here in greater Vancouver. According to my ballistic program, at 1120 yds my bullet was travelling ~1069 fps at my current altitude (speed of sound at my shooting location should be 1141 f/s).
I also have hundreds of 1000 yd shots and it's relevant info and my bullets are all supersonic, according to calculations.

The conditions for the bullets fired in the first two pics were: 79°F; 50% RH (sunny); 28.90 inHg; 1115 yds; 48.75 MOA on my Nightforce:

The chart was a gag, I thought it was pretty funny.

I don't see an issue with shooting 308 at or past 1000 yards. From everything I've read, chances are the 168SMK will be the weak link in the equation, but I rarely say never. Good luck to the OP.

Any idea on your MV?

At the Second Annual Summerland Shoot (now not put on anymore.....) I shot Winchester Ballistic Silvertips in 168 grains (factory ammo) out to 1,000 yards at the "gopher" target. They made the trip, no problem. I have no idea if they were flying sideways at that distance. But was hitting with great consistancy.

500 yards is a long way!!!
I wish I could tell everyone I did well however with the wind today and the extra guns out we only made it to 500 Yards! I did get one nice 3 shot group of about 2 1/4"
My three shot group circled bottom left 308! not bad 500 yds
I also tried my 223 but the wind sure played with it!
We had a new shooter with a Savage 110 BA 338 Lapua we spent the morning measuring and making a load for it!
I now know my gun will shoot out to 1000 yards with my 168 grain Matchkings!
The little holes are mine and the one in the middle is my buddies 338 lapua!

When you take the 168 mks out too 1000, make sure you put your target on a large sheet of plywood. Take pictures of your bullet holes and post here.
