10ga. coach gun

Should I chop my 10ga. SxS down to 18.5"

I would like a 10ga. coach gun but can't find one. What I do have is a Very nice Eibar SxS in 10ga.
My question is: Should I chop the barrel down to 18.5" or leave it???:confused:
I can't shoot steel out of it as it is full choked so it's not much use as a goose gun anymore and it's
kinda big for a chicken gun....

Hey, if you aren't using it but would if you chopped, I say go for it.

Someone else can cry because it was "butchered" after you are gone - between now and then - chop it and use it :)
 
I hunted one of those doubles for one fall. I fed it a lot of 3 1/2" #2 steel and saw no effect on the gun. They have very heavy barrel walls and can take the numbered sized steel no problem. T and F is another story and the chokes should be opened a bit for lettered steel sizes.

"Very nice Eibar"....hmm. I wouldn't do it. Open it up for steel if that"s all you need. However, it is YOUR gun. Do what will please you the most.
 
I have had a few 10 SxS and loved them. Have it opened up and use it. It might get more use as a waterfowl gun then a novel coach gun. I have a Outlaw that is fun but seldom gets used. ( the guys back off when I use it for skeet). I think it will have better resale if opened then cut. I know I would be more interested.
 
I have a cut down single that is tons of fun. I have been casually looking for a double to do the same to. Hard to find a SxS 10g with ejectors though.
 
You plan on using this gun as a cut down then go ahead. Resale will be affected but if you are keeping it simply not an issue.
 
I had an H&R 10 gauge that I chopped down. I regret selling it! I could still hit 12" steel (with slugs) at 100 yards no problem. Great bear gun, just too heavy for back packing!
 
I put a few pictures up in my first post. The chokes measure .730". That makes it a very full choke.
If I chop it, to keep the front sling swivel I'd have to cut it at 21". It's a 32.5" barrel right now.
Finding a smith to open the chokes up is no easy task.
I also have a Limbsaver recoil pad to install as the original rubber one was done.

You can pick up a coach gun anywhere - that one is a fine shotgun from the photos and well worth saving IMHO so open her up and go pound geese or pheasant or whatever.
 
You can't get a 10ga. coach gun anywhere. And if anybody knows a smith that can open chokes up on a double 10ga. I'm all ears.

I say go for it!

I whipped up a quick mockup--I don't have all my programs here at work so I had to use MS Paint but I think it'd look pretty good.

that looks awesome! If I were you I'd chop it at 21" though, keep that front swivel. if there's enough barrel width maybe you can get it threaded for removable chokes after?
 
If it was a plain boxlock shotgun I would maybe shorten the barrels. But there is no way I would be destroying a nice looking, decent quality sidelock to make a coach gun that will likely be a passing fad. But it already sounds like you can't be talked out of it so I guess a fine shotgun will be destroyed.
