10mm for bear defense

We flew into Otter Lake in back of Prince George (before it was clear cut) and we carried a remimgton 870 with a deer barrel (18" with sights) anywhere around camp, gathering wood, fishing etc. The first two were slugs and then SSG for the rest. It was very short and had an uncle mike sling on it. It was was a joy to carry and was a good choice.

My buddy had two 7mm mags rounds deflect off a big blacks skull near a dump in Fort McMurry and it didn't go down until he drilled it in the shoulder a couple of times, so if I had a handgun I would do a lot of running first, even if you're not supposed to.

Just for the record, I have been in a ton of remote camps for months on end in the summers, in fact I probably spent twice as much time in the bush then lots of hunters as it is my job. I never had a dead animal hanging but we had a ton of food with us including fresh meat. I ran a 2 and a half month 10 person camp that was helicopter access only and never had one bear problem in camp. One crew had a grizzly charge them about 10km from camp but it never showed up in camp. It is possible to hunt and camp and still have no bear problems or if you do then to walk away from the situation without incident. As you said, your buddies were chased off from an Elk and if you are unlucky enough to attract a bear, then you should split and let the bear have it, end of problem. If you are fishing on the coast and a seal comes up and steals your salmon off your line what are you going to do, jump in and try and kill the seal for doing what comes natutrally to it?

Just for the record up in this part of the world we have bears, lots of bears, blacks are the worst. If one decides to make you lunch you won't be walking away. Chances of it hapenning are very low but anyone who wonders the bush around here in the summer unarmed or at least without bear spray is part of the lower gene pool IMHO.

If you're sleeping out with blood on your clothes in bear country, you're asking to earn a Darwin award.

I don't usually get into bear discussions, but keeping food or things a bear might interpret as food on your person when you're sleeping is about the worst thing I could think of to do.

And having a firearm of any sort MAY save you, but it'll be pure luck because you aren't smart enough to take care of yourself. Firearms (as Chris pionted out) aren't a universal cure for the problem. Especially of you do stupid things.

Last time I checked most people don't operate firearms effectively while asleep.

Hell Albertans arm twist Grizz while they are sleeping, keeps their minds active. You have to remember Calgarians most likely sleep in silk pajamas anyway. Least their football team did when I was a kid in Edmonton.
