10mm vs .40 s&w

10mm has more power I will agree with but I've never seen that a 40S&W is more accurate maybe it is the guns I own my Colt Delta Elite 10mm is by far the most accurate handgun I have ever owned and I can push 135gr Nosler HP's to 1750fps.

I also had a G23 40S&W and have a G20 and a G29 10mm's with 40S&W barrels I do not see a difference in accuracy between the 2 rounds.

Another thing I see is that when my top 10mm loads hit paper they hit so hard that it tears twice as big of a hole than a 40... :D

I always though more speed= less deviation. Wouldn't that make the 10mm more accurate if anything? I don't look down on the .40 but it is NOT in the same league as 10mm Auto.

The .40 S&W is a version of the 10mm Auto designed for bureaucrats and females. 10mm will get you laid, it's that good.

Here is a pic that will help explains things :D

Didn't the 10mm come into being after the April 86 Miami shoot-out?
And Isn't the .40S&W just the F.B.I. loading of the 10mm,when they down loaded it so that their agents could handle the recoil and hit the targets better?

The adoption of a new calibre was brought about by the Miami shootout. The 10mm dates to the late 70's\early '80s. The .40S&W was brought about due to complaints of excessive recoil and blast. The lowered the powder charge then realized having a cartridge that big was needless and shortened into what we know as the .40.

No, the 10mm existed before 1986. IIRC the FBI went to the 10mm ctg for the extra power after the infamous shootout with the bank robbers in Florida. The problem they subsequently ran into however was that the existing guns chambering the 10mm ctg were very large in the frame/grip area and presented a challenge for persons with smaller hands.

The .40 S&W was developed so that a 10mm bullet could be loaded/put into a ctg that would fit a 9mm [smaller] sized frame gun. Kinda like the long action vs short action deal with rifles.

At the end of the day it still boils down to shot placement to stop a fight with a pistol ctg, though..... ;)

Good article on the development of the .40S&W:

On a side note I was desperate for a box of 10mm ammo as I have a new gun coming this week, I paid 48.95 :bangHead: for a box of Remington UMC 180gr from a shop in the GTA who seems to capitalize on the wealth from the Asian community. :bsFlag: But what do ya do,I'm waiting on 10mm brass!;)

I hope you didn't get starline brass off the guy on CGN. I ordered mine early January and I am still waiting. Luckily I got 500 off another member. I don't expect to see my order for a long time. Frickin yankees:p.

IMHO the 10mm Auto is the ultimate semi-auto pistol cartridge.

Ditto

Its no match at all for 10mm although when you look at them side by side the difference seems small.

I had a glock 29 with two barrels. I bagged up the .40 barrel because it was just no fun. .40 S&W. It stands for Slow & Weak. LOL

Its good enough for Conservation officers to wound bears with so they can track them for hours through the woods after they get their shotgun.

10mm in the right loading is a suitable cartridge to get your wildernass ATC with after you jump through all the right hoops. Ask Gunnar at Armco if you doubt it.

The only drawback I see? The ammount of time frequent shooting has me spending at the reloading bench!

I carried 10mm's on my ATC for 5 years before the RCMP told me I couldn't carry a semi-auto any longer due to them being unreliable.

I hear that they have had their minds changed now so I am applying to get my G29 onto my permit right away.

Wow, and them with semi's in THEIR holsters.....

Does this "short and weak" moniker actually fly in the real world? I mean... I don't really care for shooting .40S&W because of the snappy muzzle flip (I prefer 9mm and .45ACP)... but to call .40S&W anemic?

Maybe next we'll all be comparing bench press stats, or bicep measurements! :p

Well, there aren't many people hunting Black Bear and Deer with .40 S&W. Anyone who calls the .40 "anemic" is likely just trying to bug all the .40 owners. Though like I said two different leagues.

Quick comparison of Double-Tap ammo. Both loads are impressive though the 10mm is really up there.

.40 S&W 180gr. Gold Dot JHP 4"bbl
1105 FPS 488ft\lbs

The 180gr. Gold Dot JHP from DoubleTap Glock 20:
1305 FPS 688 ft\lbs

There are risk takers out there too that take advantage of the 10mm's stronger case to push the cartridge to ridiculous speeds. I saw one load a while back pushing a 200 grain solid to 1350 fps.

I found some Ordnance gel results, also from Double-Tap

DoubleTap .40 S&W Penetration / expansion (4"bbl)
165gr Gold Dot JHP @ 1200fps - 14.0" / .70"
180gr Gold Dot JHP @ 1100fps - 14.75" / .68"

10mm (4.6"bbl)
135gr JHP @ 1600fps - 11.0" / .70" frag nasty
155gr Gold Dot JHP @ 1475fps - 13.5" / .88"
165gr Gold Dot JHP @ 1400fps - 14.25" / 1.02"
165gr Golden Saber JHP @ 1425fps - 14.75" / .82"
180gr Golden Saber JHP @ 1330fps - 16.0" / .85"
180gr Gold Dot JHP @ 1300fps - 15.25" / .96"
200gr XTP @ 1250fps - 19.5" / .72"
230gr Equalizer @ 1040fps - 11.0" and 17.0" / .62" and .40"

If only we could hunt with handguns:(...

I spoke with a guy in the US that hunts with his 10mm. He had no reason to lie as there's no way I could buy a gun from him. Face to face with him, he seemed very confident in hunting black bear and deer with it. Seems good enough for me. .40 S&W is a great police cartidge. Better than 9mm anyway. But its not 10mm.
