Hi folks,

I've been reading quite a bit about the options available to allow more than a 5rd mag capacity in AR's. I was wondering if those with the most knowledge could help fill out a list to help everyone looking for info on these mags. I will edit and add info provided by the experts and folks who actually own these mags. Thanks in advance to anyone who is able to help with this! :D


Rock River Arms LAR-15 pistol mags:
Confirmed .223 capacity - 10rds
Feeding issues - none, mag is designed for .223
Construction - metal only
Suppliers - shopquestar.com

Robinson Arms XCR .223 pistol mags:
Confirmed .223 capacity - 10rds
Feeding issues - none, mag is designed for .223
Construction - metal only
Suppliers - wolverinesupplies.com

Robinson Arms XCR 7.62x39 pistol mags:
Confirmed 7.62x39 capacity - 10rds max, will seat on a closed bolt.
Confirmed 5.56mm capacity - 13rds max, won't seat on a closed bolt.
Confirmed 6.8SPC capacity - 11rds max, will seat on a closed bolt.
Feeding issues - feeding issues reported on .223 where rounds fit loosely in mag, and last few rounds 'jump out' (only fix is a modified 5.56 follower). No feeding issues reported with 6.8SPC.
Notes - using an aftermarket base plate (such as a Magpul Ranger plate) will reduce the capacity by one for any calibre. These are ideal for bench-shooting.
Construction - metal only.

Alexander Arms .50 Beowulf pinned 5rd rifle mags:
Confirmed 5.56mm capacity - up to 15rds in metal mags, up to 16rds in polymer mags. Both will seat on a closed bolt.
Feeding issues - none reported on metal mags based on 8 mags tested in 3-gun competition with avg of 25rds put through each mag. On polymer mags the follower can stick, but can be fixed by lubricating.
Construction - metal and polymer versions available.

.458 SOCOM pinned 5rd rifle mags: (Are these even available in Canada?)

The 762 xcr mags hold 13 for sure.
With 13 they don't load on a closed bolt.
They don't fit all that tight, and I have yet to Use it.

To Mrsmitty, I'm not trying to poke any hornet nests. I just wanted to collect info on these mags to help those of us looking for higher capacity mags. A lot of us never even knew there were options to have more than 5 rounds in an AR, never mind that there were so many options. :(

I think that the hornet's nest in question here is that the past week has seen a popularising of the fact that the 50BE mags will accomodate many rounds of .223. Subsequently, there's been a big run on these items. Backorders and whatnot...

Beowolf mags.
Hold 13-14 and will seat on a closed bolt.

With a sample size of about 8, I have yet to see any malfuctions that are magazine related with an avg of 25 rnds per mag.

This is with a few differnt guys and rifles shooting 3 gun.

Is this true? The .50 beuwf only hold 13-14 rounds of .223... I get 13 rounds of .223 into my 7.62x39 xcr 10 round pistol mags. If I can't get more than that I'm going to try and cancel my order with armtac. Can anyone please confirm this. A few very reputable members here have said 18. Cheers.
 
10 round .50 Beowulf mags are in the works. That should fit 27-28 rounds of 5.56, we're finally getting close to standard capacity magazines.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but there's no maximum caliber limit for pistols. 20mm and 30mm rounds are classified as Destructive Devices down south, but we have no such limitations. Imagine a 10 round 30mm mags...

I think it depends where they get pinned...pinned to 5 = 13-14, pinned to 5.9 = 17-18. Where will the ones from Armtac be pined? Your guess is as good as mine.

Sorry I didn't make myself clear, I meant that 10 round 30mm mags would be awesome.

Too bad the feeding lip on the mag will be 100% useless for feeding 556, so major modifications would be needed for whatever firearm you're using these in. But still... just imagine the capacity.
