I bought two 10rd mags and went to the range to try them out. While I was there the range marshall came over and questioned me about the mag capacity. I didn't know the legal side so I guessed and told him that since it was a restricted firearm you were allowed ten rounds. It seemed to satisfy him. Am I correct?

Thats weird, Your reasoning was wrong and the fact that he believed it is very wrong.

10 round LAR mags are a way around the normal capacity restriction for semi-auto rifles (which is 5). It gets around the normal restriction because that magazine was/is originally designed for the LAR15 pistol (a .223 pistol) and it just so happens they also fit the AR15 rifle.

Well you think that someone calling himself a "range marshall" would know the circumstances around the 10rd AR mag development? Anyway nuff said.

Semi-automatic rifles can only fire five rounds. Magazines for them can only hold five rounds, otherwise they are considered "prohibited devices" (like, say you take the rivet out of your pinned 30 rd mag, it becomes prohibited). The rifles designation as restricted or non-restriced doesn't change, it's the magazine that becomes illegal because it's made for a semi automatic rifle.

The LAR-15 10 rd mags get around this issues because they are specifically designed for what has been classified as a "pistol" (restricted) due to it's size. It's internal workings however are exactly the same as any rifle AR so the magazine just happens to fit. Therefore the magazine (10 rd) is not a prohibited device, and the rifle's designation never changes, so it's not illegal to shoot ten rounds out of the rifle with the use of this officially "legalized" magazine.

Is there something a guy can print out and carry with him to the range that would clarify this LAR mag exemption, should a law enforcement officer question it. Sure the mag says LAR-15 on it, but what's that mean to someone who doesn't know that is a pistol.

M1 garand for one it is allowed to hold 8, and others of historical significance.

Grizzlypeg: I belive they say LAR-15 pistol on them do they not?

The best thing to print out is the section of the law on mag restrictions, but it would still need some explanation.

Go to Questar website and search 10 rd mags, you will find a letter from the RCMP stating they can be used, copy the letter put it in with your PAL/certs and the printout of the RCMP fast fact sheet for LEO's on firearm storage/transport that you have already downloaded and printed, right?

Right, although recently I have been thinking about just printing the excerpts related to storage/transpo straight from the firearms act. ;)

The last time I looked, the old letter was gone and there is now a longer internal memo type of arrangement on the site, which I could not print out nicely at all. Does anyone have a good copy, or link to a copy of the original letter that could be printed out and look decently like a letter?

m1 grand I know is 1... If its orginal and not remake..

Really, I'm not 100% sure but i believe this is false. I dont think it has to be an original garand such ww2 or korea era made for the mag limit exemption. Pretty sure all garands are allowed 8 rounds. Experts feel free to chime in.

Thanks for the info on others that don't have a 5 round restriction. I'll have to look into that a little more for interests sake.

LMAO......LOL.....ay, that's funny...

What's this? That's not the little folding brochure that is handed out at the courses is it?
