My question is dlask has 11.5 slug barrels for the 870. My question is what happens if take a 20" slug barrel and cut it down to 11.5" will cutting it weaken the metal... what implications will it cause with the class of the firearm my understanding its if its manufactured its fine... I don't want to do anything illegal, just want to build a cool 870 for three gun comps.

It's illegal to cut them below 18.5". Dlask "manufactures" them that length, this is why they can and you cannot....if you install one of their short barrels, as long as your shotty is over 26" (IIRC), then you are OK. Anything less would be considered restricted...

As Cantom said, IT IS ILLEGAL TO CUT THEM BELOW 18.5"

They are in theory identically the same thing but because its manufactured its ok. Looks like I have to fork out 300 bills for a shorty barrel.

hypothetically could my gunsmith modify the barrel to that length?

Still illegal and your gunsmith wouldn't do it.
