Hello all just purchased a used and well enjoyed 11-87 and will be cleaning and inspecting it before I put it to good use. The bolt has some build up and needs a clean up. Looking for suggestions. I have seen some guys soak it in vinegar and then going through the polishing process. I do a lot of polishing on aluminum tanks and chrome and may want to achieve a mirror finish. Not owning a 11-87 before I have read a lot of "very little oil" pretty much just trigger assembly and rails. I may look into another stock or a camo wrap. Please point me in the right direction of the bolt polishing and I will start there.

Personally I'd recommend a thorough cleaning from front to back and then a good test fire session. See if there are any issues with the gun first before you go modding stuff, that way you have a reference point to work with.

Full spring kit from Wolf is cheap and a good investment to.

Since you already have experience polishing you should be able to avoid the classic mistake of taking off to much material and in the wrong place. There are a couple things to consider though. If this is going to be a field gun, is it really worth it to put a safe queen like buff on it ? Not much sense in wasting 2 hours of your time and first day out it gets scratched. The other issue is functionality. A ' perfect ' finish might be great for some stuff but alot less so for others. Engine cylinders are a great example. After you bore them out to a mirror bright dimensionally perfect finish, the next thing you do is scratch them with a hone or they're useless. They wont retain lube otherwise. Maybe just high buff the side facing the ejection port and leave the rest.

Great point mtl, it will be a field gun but like most guys I like tinkering. I was only going to be buffing visual side. I will definitely be test firing before I do any big mods. But if I can find any flaws first I would much rather do that. You definitely have me thinking about the spring kit though. I will be doing new o ring no matter how it looks just so I have a piece of mind. Any thoughts on pre soak in white vinegar? Do you have a link for the spring kit?

I don't mind vinegar on my fries, not sure about putting it on an 11-87. If it's an O ring trick I've never heard of that one before.
 
You say turkey season is coming up. Are you sure you want something shiny out there to catch the turkey's attention? Sort of defeats the camo you will be wearing.
