11-87 Sportsman opinions

My dad is in his mid-seventies and still pounds the hunting grounds with authority. He's looking for a new shotgun for his deer hunting, slug-only area.

Wants a semi, preferably around 1K with a rifled barrel. The European offerings are beauts but way above his budget, the Turkish guns are nice-looking but he'd rather get a known brand.

Enter the 11-87 Sportsman Synthetic Deer, if fits the bill in price and function but I haven't actually seen one or know anyone who owns one. I understand that they are the no-frills version, hence the cheaper price, but are they reliable? I assume that they pattern similarly to their standard 11-87 brothers, does anyone have a cantilevered rifled 11-87 and if so what kind of 100 yd accuracy are you getting?

While I bought my daughter a used 1100 premium trap with very nice wood, they along with the 11-87 are considered by many to require more than average maintenance to keep them clean and therefore reliable on the cycling. But that is just what I am hearing, without experience to back up the statement.

I run mine wet. Couple hundred rounds on the clay range and cleaning involves removing the barrel, wiping the mag tube and piston rings, re-oiling, and good to go
 
I noted the indication for a semi but get him to take a look at the Savage 220 (20ga) if he would - very accurate straight out of the box. Personally, I'm not a fan of Savage firearms but this is one gun that I really like.

Good suggestion, as luck would have it he bought an older 212 (with fixed mag) from another older gentleman last month. He's having problems loading all three rounds but uses a semi normally and would transition to it better.
 
I have an 11-87 Sportsman with the 28" barrel. I use it for waterfowl, turkey and the odd trip to the trap range. It has functioned flawlessly for me using everything from light trap loads to 3" BBs. Can't say how the slug barrel will be but my 11-87 functions well. I'm thinking the slug version should be no different.
 
I have used an 1187 Sportsman for 9 years now with no problems at all. Change the o ring once in awhile and it's good to go. I clean mine when hunting is over and it's good for the next year.
 
I have had more than a few Rem autos both 1100 and 11 87 .and all have worked well.I would buy another in a heart beat .Dutch
 
I have owned several 1100's and 11-87's and would not own either again unless one was given to me and even then I'd sell it. I never owned autoloaders with as many inherent problems as the Remington 1100 and 11-87. I haven't owned either since about 1991 and never will again. They are junk IMO which is too bad because they do point well and pattern well but the reliability factor scores incredibly low in my books.
 
So what kind of problem did you have. I have hunted geese deer and everything in between without so much as a ftf ....?
 
Just sold mine to a friend. Never had a problem with it. He got his 1st buck(and 2 more) with it when I lent it to him 3yr ago. 1:35 twist barrel liked rem 2 3/4" accutips. 4" group. I got a sm 8pt with it this yr at 90yd. and a coyote at 77yd. Upgraded to maxus, 1:28 twist
