Would she be getting a 12 or 20 11-87? If a 12 would it be a 3 or 3 1/2?
The 3 1/2 may have problems cycling light target loads. How new of a 11-87? New? 10 years old?
I was in the same boat and came so close to buying a 11-87 before considering a Mossberg 930 or Weatherby SA-08. Ended up buying the 930 for myself and now buying a 20 gauge youth SA-08 for my finance..
I wouldn't go with the 11-87 Sportsman for clay shooting. They are hit and miss, so to speak, when talking about reliably cycling target loads. Quality problems are also abound with new Remingtons. My 11-87 Sportsman will FTE, usually stovepipe, about once every 25 shells. I've tried different manufacturers, shot size, shot weight, DRAM equivalence. Still the same. No problem with heavy field loads or magnum shells. A friend's 11-87 had problems ejecting steels head shells, which the cheap bulk target load now all seem to have. Had to deburr his chamber to improve ejection.
I have an older 11-87 it works flawlessly with every shell I put through it,I have heard all the stories of them having problems, but I haven't seen it,my buddy shoots a Beretta 391 and I've never seen him have a problem or hear him complain about his gun
The 11-87 is a more of a hunting gun. If it's for clay shooting then the 1100 would be a better choice. But with any Remington their quality control continues to slide.
I'd suggest she look at a Beretta 391, Browning Gold or Winchester SX3 ahead of the Remington.
FTE for a 11-87 can be cured, with my two guns, by smearing CLP on the mag tube.
This also has the great advantage of keeping the carbon in solution, easy to wipe off, and it does not bake onto the tube.
