Hi Guys,

I'm wondering if any of you guys load the 110gr v-max in your .308 with Varget? I have checked on the Hodgdon site and they don't list any load data. I am wanting to poke a few coyotes and picked up a couple boxes of 110 v-max's. I can pick up a different powder but I have about 3 1/2 pounds of Varget sitting here which I would like to use. I know every rifle will be different but I'm just wondering if anyone is using this combination? Any load data would be greatly appreciated. Also I am shooting a Rem. 700 5R Milspec 24" barrel.

Thanks for the help.

It looks like varget is a bit slow for that bullet. If the manufacturer of the powder doesn't reccomend it, odds are you won't be happy with a trial load. It is in their favor to show any load that even gives moderate success. They are in business to sell powder.

^^beware, those are both compressed loads. My pet load for the 110gn V-max is 46.5gn WC-735. 3100fps (chronied). MPBR 215yds, 2.5" +/- line of sight. Sorry, I use the surplus powder for everything rifle that I have. Keeps the errors down. Hope this helps.
EDIT: forgot to say, shoots 3/8" groups from my Mossberg 100ATR Nighttrain.

I've shot tons of the following load:

110 VMAX
48.0 gr. Varget
2.725" COAL
Lapua Brass
210M primer

~3150 fps out of a 26" Bartlein 1-11.25" twist

Not the fastest load, but very accurate. I also use it because I have tons of Varget.

"...beware, those are both compressed loads..." Compressed loads are nothing to worry about.
"...they don't list any load data..." On-line data will be limited on any site. There might be 110 grain Varget data in the Hodgdon manual though.

nope, they aren't. Actually they are quite good for overall ignition. However, I am always careful to start well below (10%) the minimum start load for any compressed load data. That way I have a good chance of seeing how that performs in my firearm. I certainly did not mean that there was any danger inherent in a compressed load. Sorry if I misled you, OP.

Thanks guys for the info, I think I will try it and see what happens. I always start low so I don't think it will be to much of a problem. Any other info would be great.

Thanks Again.

These are short bullets. Don't try and seat them out too far or there won't be enough neck holding them. They jump fine.

Compressed loads are fine as long as you drop the powder consistently and don't over-compress the powder. Over-compression will cause variations in seating depth and crushing the hell out of the powder changes it's burn rate. Both of these can affect the shot-to-shot consistency of the load.

48 gr Varget for around 3100fps

Not the fastest, but less of the barrel leaves with the bullet that way.

Came up with a blue dot load for 2400 fps as well, for the plinker, but I'll have to check see what I noted for that one as I haven't used it recently.

I run them with 50gr Varget no problem. Pretty much fills the case into the neck. Not compressed enough to push the bullet out though.
