I have an Antique Mauser in 11mm I would like to shoot, I have seen ammo for sale at gunshows and even here on CGN, but I am a bit unsure about the newer stuff. I see quite often people selling that 1950-1960 vintage Dominion stuff but I think that one is loaded with modern smokeless, but these rifles were designed to shoot black powder. But then I know that Dominion produced lots of this ammo, specifically to be used in these rifles. So what to do with this modern Dominion ammo, shoot or not? BTW I do not intend to reload.

If you don't reload, don't even think of shooting those rifles, unless your wallet is the size of Donald Trump's.

BTW the Dominion Brass is boxer primed and perfectly suited for reloading.
I reload and cast my own bullets, which makes shooting those fun rifles very affordable.

I am not looking to shoot it as much as I am shooting say my 8mm Mauser, but I wouldn't mind taking it out to the range once and maybe have a box of ammo for it; not going to be an everyday shooter. So are you saying that Dominion is good to shoot thru the old Mauser?

Absolutely, and it will be your only option.

But isn't that Dominion ammo smokeless?

Yes it is smokeless, but loaded to Black powder velocities. In MHO it is better than a Black powder load, because it is easy to clean, all you are missing is the smoke and smell.

.
The asking price of 11mm Dominion yellow box ammo at the last three Gun Shows was $150 for 20 rounds. I have three boxes of original stuff left, (don't ask me to sell one to you but one box can be sold at a good price with some 11 mm Mausers that I have on the EE. It also has to do with shipping and legality as shipping any ammo is VERY expensive.)

I reload my own ammo, cast my own bullets, and have a small lathe. The 11 mm Mauser cases can be made, but it is also time consuming and a bit expensive. The biggest problem is the rim, (diameter and thickness).

Rusty Woods Trading has 11mm Mauser cases with proper headstamps, expensive, but ready to load.

I shoot BP in my '71, but many others use smokeless loaded to proper pressures.

I was forming from 4570. Bev rims and ran through dies
Works.fine...i was shooting a 71/84. Cycled fine through magazine
Head needs.to be turned and bevel put on rim for extractor to ride over
I converted hundreds of cases not 1.issue
4570 tad short...but better than paying over 100$ for 20 bertram casings

SR4759 no longer produced ..neither is SR7625 and SR4756
only chance you have is finding left over stock.
I had used IMR4198 in 43 Mauser.. used trap door 4570
Data reduced by 10% to start..worked up from there
Even made loads with 2400 powder and dacron filler
Quite accurate and cheap to shoot

I have handloaded the 43 Mauser now for quite sometime and agree on 4198 powder being very useful for working up loads. At one time or another I've also used several others such as Unique, Herco and similar burn rate powders. As mentioned using the Trap Door 45-70 data as a starting point works well.
I don't have much experience using Blackpowder in this chambering except for a box of ancient Remington shells I bought a long time ago, surprisingly in spite of their age they all fired just fine. I have to admit the smokeshow was impressive and a lot of fun. I really like the 43 Mauser.

I bought bertram cases a few years ago i was just firing the 17th relaod out of them this morning. Normaly load them with H4895 or IMR3031 and use trap door load data from hodgdon reloading online. I was using 40.5gr imr3031 this morning with 355gr lead. Pretty light load. But the powder burned well

I have found some lose rounds foe the 43 mauser from 5-8$ each so i have a few but im saving them. So you can come by them if you look long enough

You can get the old Dominion .43 mauser factory loads for $60 to $80 a box at gunshows here in the Maritimes generally. If you know someone back east they could grab you some. Shipping is a pain in the a** though as Canada Post will not ship ammo.

At the Woodstock gunshow today I saw a fella selling a set of RCBS 43 Mauser dies plus 40 empty rounds of Dominion brass for 125.00. An absolute steal these days, almost bought them myself but I'm already well set up with dies and gobs of brass. Hope someone with a 43 picked them up.

I bought a set of rcbs dies on line but there was no expander die included.
You really need that if you're using lead bullets,so check before you buy.

Now when you say " online " do you mean from an individual selling them privately or as a new set from a retailer. The RCBS 43 Mauser die set I have, as well as any other RCBS set in 43 Mauser I've seen is a 3 die set so the neck expander plug and die is normally included. As you point out it is needed for easy seating of the bullets, rots without it for sure.
