Just put together my shorty, i'm wondering if the Surefire 618 hangs out to far past the end of the barrel, and may get damaged by the muzzle blast. Any advice?

It will be alright but the anodizing will become worn, and a high likelyhood of burst light bulbs, due to the concussion.

On my 14 inch with a Surefire, I find after about 20 rounds or so I really have to clean off the lense front, all covered in GSR. Otherwise I have maybe 700-800 rounds through it...mostly slugs.

Gadget is correct. You can get around this by putting on an A11 adapter which basically gets you to remove the lamp housing (like you do when you change the batteries) and screw on an aluminum cap (the A11) while you are "training" at the range. when you are "operational" carrying in the bush for bear defence you screw the lamp housing back in.

Another way you can get around it is to put a wrap of 100mph tape around the bezel while shooting and remove when done. The fouling will come off with the tape. Caution - dont leave the tape on for an extended period otherwise the bezel will get gooey from the adhesive.

This is one reason I will be going with a 14 vs 12 inch barrel. Even then you still get fouling on the bezel.

yeah agreed. The fouling however is very easy to wipe off. I just use abit of CLP and it comes off with a quick wipe. The Surefire is a good unit, takes a huge beating. You can notice some impact damage to the batteries when removing them even though theres a cap and spring in there.

Thanks for the input guys, I may just take the lamp off for range-time and put it back on for bears and zombies! I like the Butler Creel flip-up cap idea, what size should I be looking for?

Surefire recommends against using the standard batteries for the shotgun or for that matter all their weapon lights. They usually recommend (even though they ship with the standard batteries) their "weaponized/shock isolated" batteries. BAsically it is the standard batteries with a washer between them and then they are shrink wrapped. This prevents the damage from recoil. I just take my batteries out for heavy recoiling guns and leave them in for 556 type guns.
