I spent an hour last night trying to wade through threads regarding the various capabilities of different barrel lengths and came away with not much specific info. I know velocity (and hence barrel length) is key for the performance of the 5.56 and .223. So what are the limitations of a 12.5 barrel with respect to terminal performance and effective range? I have read that many won't go below a 16 inch barrel. So what am I lacking that those with 16 inchers have?:D

Thanks in advance for any input.

Thanks for the links!

Dekard - I've tried the 97 at the 200 yard gongs and I have no problems hitting them. But gongs don't tell me much about bullet performance at that range. It looks from the data above that with a 12.5 I'm going to have serious non-fragmentation issues at anything probably over 100 yards?? I need more info:redface:.

And of what concern is "lethality" any way? You will not be shooting a living creature with your short mouse gun, unless you have or intend to bend the law a wee bit. If you can reliability hit a target at 100m then I think you are doing pretty well really.

Sigh....I'm just curious. I very much enjoy the science behind these toys. I'll edit my post since wording seems to bring out the post police:rolleyes:.
