12 as a good bear protection shell??

Defence logic

I have an ATC and carry a 629. I load 5 cylinders with birdshot and then the 6th I load with a 350gr bullet!

Ya right.

I do have the ATC but when I do carry the shotgun, it is slug after slug after slug.

Have any of you guys been in other places besides the computer chair or the grocery store?

We all know that everybody on this board is an expert when it comes to bear defence, don't you remember?
What size birdshot do you load BTW? ;)

(NO I'M NOT challenging anyone here, just poking fun at yet another bear defence thread that is going off the rails like the rest seem to do...)

Man eating bears

Is Canada overrun with man eating bears or something. Like WTF?

Seeing a bear is cool and rarely dangerous IMHO.

A 12 gauge with slugs or buckshot is certainly enough to handle a bear if the need did arise.

Canada is not overrun with man eating bears as far as I know, however to think that a large omnivore will not take a chance on eating meat when opportunity arises is foolish.

Seeing a bear is a cool sight and in most cases seeing a bear is not dangerous, even when seeing it from your car! However again not all of us are viewing bears from a vehicle or 400 yards away. For example, I work day in day out in the northern boreal forest which is the home of at least a couple of bears of different species.

I have had this year alone my fair share of bear encounters and the season is just over the half way mark. The first one this year was somewhere around the 20 yard mark. This distance in my mind is well within the dangerous distance for sure.

I have drawn on a few bears and let me tell you what I have in my firearms. The heaviest bullets they will safely fire and still be dependable.

Lots of people on here have some interesting views on bear defence, however how many practice it day in day out. I am sure one day I will stumble upon someone that took bear defence lightly. Hopefully I will pick up a fee shotgun loaded with buckshot!

Thousands of black bears around where I live. Mostly they mind their own business, and many seem almost tame.

But this guy was in a rather pissy mood, so I got gone real fast. He was charging me at high speed, starting from about 25 yards away.
