Is there anywhere to get 12 g slugs cheap, for practicing at the range? All the ones I have seen are almost $1/slug. (rifled slugs not sabot).
Thanks

PC9's suggestion is also my answer. Price is accurate. Not all Can Tire stores stock the Winchester 15 rd value packs. You may have to visit 2 or 3 stores in your area. The bonus packs part # X12RS15VP 12 ga, 2 3/4 in, 1 oz rifled hp slug. Cannot find my receipt to give you the store's product code #.

I have just started casting slugs. Lyman mold. You can simply remove the shot from Cdn. Tire/ Wallmart value shells, insert slug and re-crimp. Accuracy was better than Win., and Federal stuff in my gun and others.

And where did you learn to do that?:slap:

Your an accident waiting for a place to happen. (A Darwinian?):runaway:

Interesting idea Ron. I was thinking about casting and reloading my own slugs and you gave me, by far, the easiest, cheapest solution.....gutting out my trap loads and putting in a slug. Darn it, another trip to WSS to by a slug mold. Just a Question: Do I need to trim the wad (the shot cup portion) or just seat the slug inside it?

Edit: RePete you express a safety concern here. Can you please alaborate so I can make an informed decision.

The shells that the birdshot is in, is designed for a certain pressure, and to lower pressure is because the shot is fluid passing through the choke.

A slug isn't fluid and causes more friction in the barrel and choke, thus elevating the pressure.

Buy the Lyman Shotshell Loading Manual and use the loads listed in there, rather than taking chances and risking damage or injury.

You may get away with it for quite a whle, but, like evrything else, it will come back and bite you in the a$$.

I've been loading shotshells for more years than I can remember and slugs for 16-17 years.

Forgot to answer your wad q.

If you use the Lee or Lyman slug, the wads are left intact, and most of the loads will use a fold crimp, but some will require a roll crimp. I stay away from roll crimps.

Slightly off topic but if you want more trigger time and increase your skills you can modify some slugs drills to work with birdshot, it can save a lot of $$ and reduce the pounding on your shoulder and brain.....(many instructors now only recommend 60-70 slugs a day because of the concussive impact of the recoil).
In the last couple of seasons I have increased the percentage of shooting involving birdshot drills, my students are happy because they can shoot more each day and their shoulders are happy too.

Cheers

Interested to hear what sort of drills ....?

Excellent advice from RePete - Buy the Lyman Shotshell Manual.

You start creating your own reloading recipes without experience in reloading shotshells and your working on a KaBoom.

The only cheap way to shoot slugs is to roll your own. I use a Lee mold. It cast a slug designed to be loaded in a shell with a standard shot wad and closed with a star crimp. It works well. I cast the slugs from wheel weights that I got for free, shells that I picked up, some 700X a guy gave me, so I'm loading for about $.05 per round. They shoot as well as factory and blow thru 5" of wet edge grain fir with ease.
