12 ga 2¾ slug for moose.. do or don't?

It's illegal to use a shotgun for moose in Québec too. I think the law has more to do with the general hunting conditions of your area. Moose are shot at longer distances here (clear cuts, large swamps, etc.). So the law is probably just trying to keep simpletons from trying long shots on moose and just wounding them.

Well, I wonder where the original person who posted this thread, is from?
I feel silly now, if he lives in BC or Quebec. He should know his own provincial game laws, after all he is going hunting!!

Many European countries, allow slug shooting shotgun use on wild boar, at 40 meters or less only.

I guess the concept of a purpose built slug shooting repeating shotgun, must be a 'rare' item on the old continent.

I dont think there should be any problems using the 2 3/4 slugs on moose, In fact this year I am gonna carry my 870 with slugs for deer.

Here is a link I have seen posted on here before but I will do it so you just have to put the http back together

h ttp://www.tacticalshotgun.ca/ballistics_shotgun.html

It has some really good info on slug performance from reduced recoil loads in fact. about 3/4 of the way down the page under the heading hunting data is a list of different animals they have taken with slugs with lots of graphic pics :)

I don't think there is a practical problem either. It's just that we are unsure of the legality in his province, for the purposes of big game hunting.
And as stated earlier BC & Quebec, forbid shotgun with slugs on moose.
We may not agree with it, but we do not advocate anyone breaking thier provincial game laws.

sorry for not answering I thought I said I wanted the thread closed. Anyway, in this cruel world named internet, nothing's in your control haha

yes i'm in Quebec, not sure its illegal to slug mooses the MRNF (ministère des ressources naturelle et de la faune) website states for reindeer and moose between april first 2008 and march 31st 2010:
Fusils: Les fusils de calibre 10 ou 12 : cartouches à balle unique
which means "shotguns: shotguns 10 and 12 ga slug cartridges only"

if you guys think the government website is wrong I guess you are right thus you should be the government Or I just can't read properly; PM me if you want the website I think giving an URL on this forum is angainst the rules

anyway you can judge me, I'm only 18 I have no big game experience and as stated in the starting post, I am most likely to not shoot at all, I bring my shotgun knowing this as I'll watch and learn. I'll play some small game (partridges) after we get (if we do) the buck down so this is why I started the thread... why not bring a couple of slugs I already have while I'm at it, cause after all you never know what will happen.

As some of you mentioned the person who invited me could judge me for bringing a shotgun. I think not... it's an elder friend of mine in a family relation type, and this act won't be the end of our relationship (unless he decides his daughter can't go out with me anymore:D)

If it is legal, then all the power in the world to you friend.
We all have to start somewhere when it comes to hunting. No-one is born an expert in these matters. And if you have a willing experienced hunter showing you the ropes, then you are a lucky person indeed.

If a fellow showed up to moose hunt with me, carrying a 12 ga smoothbore, I'd put him on a watch where he'd be shooting 75yds or less.:)
Exactly, BORROW a gun already sheesh. How smart would you feel to go hunting for moose, see a monster and not be able to shoot it cuz its 150 yards away. I'd feel like an idiot for not bringing the right tool for the job!! Yea my buddy shot a deer with a 12 gauge slug but i wouldn't recommend it unless you're a good shot not an unexperienced hunter.

K I guess the main idea of this thread has been mistated.. it should read like this:

I only have one hunting firearm, a shotgun, Ive been invited to be teached moose hunt, I will not shoot, but what if I had to with my shotgun, would 2¾ be enough?

If a grizzly is running at you and your partners dead moose that has been shot with a rifle then yes. No it shouldn't be recommended I'd say.

I`m sure a 2.75" slug would drop a moose as long as the shooter realizes its limitations. Having said that, range practice would be benificial as mentioned by Sheephunter. But if I were in the scenario where I was in the bush with my smoothbore going after chickens and had a moose tag as well. And Mr Moose pooped outta the bush(within say 75yds) and I knew my smoothbore`s capabilities then YES I would confidently shoot at Mr Moose and look forward to some tasty tenderloins that eve. I don`t think it can be said enuf that to be efficient with your smoothbore to take any game you must practice practice practice and that goes with any firearm.
If you do get the opportunity while out with your smoothbore to ethically take a moose then good on you and be sure to post pics, Bon chance!!

I met someone earlier this year out a friend of mines farm when we were playing with trap shooting one day. This guy had brought a remington 12g. pump with iron sights, no choke, out to play. I asked him why the sights and he said he used the gun for moose hunting and used slugs only for that. He has been doing it for years and has had the practice. I do not see why what you asking is not doable. As others have said, if it is legal to do so in your province to hunt moose with a shotgun and those are the loads you wish to use, take the gun and more of the slugs somewhere where you can practice and find out what you and the gun are capable of doing at 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100 yds, before hand. It might be worth exploring and worth buying another box or 2 of ammo to find out.!
