So I am trying to reload .12 ga. rubber buckshot ammo.

17.0 gr. Greendot powder
3 rubber balls total weight 83.0 grns.
fiber wad over powder ( 50 lbs. ) pressure
Cheddite primer
Win. hull
no over wad/card just crimped

problem is when I shoot them the wad stays in brl. The balls will go through both sides of a cardboard box at about
25 feet. They are minute of bear at the range I want so that is all good. I don't want them to go to fast and must not penetrate the bear. What am I doing wrong?

I would think it is a wad issue. Try a plastic wad that will carry the shot through the bore. Maybe the rubber is binding in the barrel? Something with the same thickness base as your fiber wad. Look at the BPI CSD 118 or something along that line.

Let us know how that works.

Thanks ry-guy I am waiting for some plastic wads to try,was a little worried about the wad hitting the bear as the wad is harder than the rubber shot. We will see.

what exactly are a few rubber balls going to do to a bear besides piss it off?? if you need a shotgun for a bear, you needs a shotshell for that bear too

Don't know anything about reloading, but sfrc sometimes sells rubber buckshot, if buying off the shelf stuff is an option.

Bears hate to be touched and bear bangers do not always work ( and at close range bangers will go out past the bear and send him back towards you "not good" ) I get allot of bears around my house, and I can't just kill them. I have found that a little bit of encouragement to move them is what is needed for some of them. I have used a slingshot and it does work but is awkward trying to shot out he window.Factory rubber shot is very expensive. So I have a big box of rubber balls and a .12 ga. reloader it just seems like the natural thing to put them together.

I'd guess that the rubber balls are losing a lot of speed due to rubbing in the barrel as they travel down the bore. Try coating a couple rounds in Vaseline to see if that makes a difference.

Where is your load data from?
That payload seems much too light to properly burn the powder and build up any sort of pressure to propel it. I'm not sure what kind of powder is used in shotshells with exceptionally light payloads (flares, rubber, etc.) but all powders I've tried don't work. I've tried various light payloads for fun (all single shot and checked the bore after) including wax slugs without the shot (just the wax), epoxy resin cast slugs, plastic balls, and others. Pretty much always the powder doesn't burn properly and leaves a lot of carbon and often entire flakes of unburnt powder. The velocity is anemic (often lower than I can throw the shell) and sometimes a wad sticks in the barrel. Hulls covered in carbon is common as there isn't enough pressure to seal the chamber.

I've tried fast, medium, and slow shotgun powders. Mostly Reddot, Unique, and Bluedot. For load data I pretty much just make it up as the payload is so light I figured there can't be much pressure produced (and there never is).

Hell with rubber. If not real lead buck shot, some old school course rock salt loads will not kill him but make him move not sure in what direction however ;)
Cheers

I am using load I got from the internet ( because it knows all ) for the lightest load I could find.Green dot is the only shotgun powder I have. You are right about there being unburnt powder in the brl. and I don't think the pressure is very high. I am waiting for more hulls and gas seals and maybe some different powder. As for using rock salt that is not an option as I said before penetration cannot happen,I want to move him not piss him off or injure him.

Considering who Pounder is, some of these posts really make me chuckle. :)

I don't have an answer for you but I've made lots of "rubber" slugs by just cutting the top off of trap loads, dumping out the shot and filling the shot cup with hot glue. Perfect for nailing bears in the ass, really scares them and they run fast. Not much range on them, not too loud either. Very little pressure, of course.

Need more mass to build some pressure. Ground walnut from the tumbler would help and not make your target. Faster powder would help too. Something designed for light target loads. Wst of 700x would help it build a little more steam.

I have not loaded shotgun before so this part is all new to me. Gate I like your hot glue idea. I will try that. I do however have a large box of these rubber balls and would like to keep trying to make some kind of load with them. The bears up here are getting alot less afraid of the cracker shells and harder to move. They get alot of crackers shot at them by our DNR boys and have learned that it is just a big noise and nothing more so why run.

That is on my list of things to try. I did some marking of bears with them back in the 80-90's and it did not seem to bother them. The DNR boys have looked at paint balls again with mixed results, may be it the balls are frozen it might have a better effect. We were also told that they (dnr) did not want to see bears with polka dots on them

My Dad was having some bear troubles around the hives. Electric fence went up first, and it helped but not enough. Dad contacted MNR and they provided him with some "deterent" 12G ammo. Not rubber balls but lead in a beanbag (lead bag?) so fine it's almost powder. Urban setting where range is an issue.

Curious to know how effective those chest thumpers the cops use when a riot breaks out?
They shoot rubber projectiles.
Or is the method you're contemplating on the same idea boomer?

As you can see in my last post the range is very close and as this bear is not afraid of my dog and is to close for cracker shells. This is the type of situation that requires some kind of impact on the bear to move him. DNR will not provide any kind of ammo to anyone. So for me cost is a factor, rubber bullets are $5 plus each and this situation can happen many many times a week. I know that I live in bear country that is my choice and they have every right to be there too. I have do desire to kill any of them so a non lethal way to get him of my deck is what I am looking for.
