12 gauge beanbag rounds for problem bears?

With regards to the home made beanbag/rubber round:

If you can find some sort of rubber ball that is .690 diameter or less, that will easily fit inside a typical plastic shotgun wad, and shouldn't cause any issues when fired. *assuming we are using a 12 gauge*

The trick would be finding the rubber balls. I think the old "bouncy" balls we had as kids might work. And I think Wholesale sports sells rubber slingshot ammo, althought those would resemble more of a "buckshot" load than a single "slug" load.

Step 1) Buy some Beanbag rounds from Margo.
Step 2) Show them to everyone who leaves their cooler out on the back porch.
Step 3) You get the drift...

Why don't you get the town to fine people for leaving their coolers/garbage out. If that doesn't work, I've heard bean bag rounds can be an effective deturant for that as well.

Leave the Bears alone, they don't know any better and it's a shame to kill them for something humans have done. Not to sound to "tree huggy" or anything.

I guess you would put a sabot around the home made rd to keep it from gumming up the barrel or disintegrating? I guess it would need to be tested to make sure it doesn't penetrate or act in some unforseen way. If so, might be a good cost effective bear deterrent.

How close? Are you ter guy shooting off rounds across the road from me tonight?

I'd personally just use the shot cup and make sure it didn't adhere to the case...I will most likely try one out this weekend:p
 
A cracker shell supported by the use of a rubber slug tends to get a bear moving, but if there is an accessible food source for them you won't keep them away short of relocating them (a game branch issue) or killing them (by anyone who feels threatened). This is the unfortunate result when a community is unable to manage it's waste disposal, but it is far from being uncommon problem.

I am particularly uncomfortable concerning the use of lethal and non-lethal loads in the same gun. Cracker shells have a nasty habit of leaving partial obstructions in the bore of a shotgun, and there is always the chance of a slug finding its way into the chamber when you intend to fire a scare cartridge, or perhaps worse, a non-lethal round finding its way into the chamber when you need a slug. Although it is not always possible, I much prefer to have a dedicated cracker shell gun and a dedicated killing gun. This can be in the form of a two gun team armed with shotguns one loaded with scare cartridges the other with lethal rounds, or it could be a lone individual armed with a cracker shell pistol and a lethal firearm. Provided you are vigilant for the problems associated with using scare cartridges and lethal cartridges in the same gun, and it is commonly practiced, you shouldn't have a problem, but personally the practice interferes with my comfort level.

Definitely agree with you on that one. Post 19 dealt with this to a degree, but you phrased it more eloquently.
 
Yeah, but in this case if something goes wrong with the rubber slug, you can just step inside the house and grab a rifle....:D

Something like this happened to an RCMP officer in Whistler last year. She thought she had loaded the shotgun with non lethal bear deterrent ammo, but instead used live ammo, and shot the bear. Much to the horror of the tourists crowded around watching the bear:eek:

I agree. It is not fair (and a bit discriminatory) to not give these poor young black bears a chance to turn their lives around... most of them are in their teenage years and have little choice but to turn to crime at this point in their lives. Basketball courts, not buckshot is the solution to what really is a societal problem and not a bear problem.
