I've been trying to find some 12ga bear bangers, and haven't had much luck. The only ones I can find are for the pen launchers, or specialty guns.

Does anyone know where these can be had?

Found lots of 12ga rubber slugs and bean bag shells, just not bangers.

Thanks!

Bear bangers are REALLY BIG firecrackers (using the finest quality flash powder), loaded into a 12ga hull, with 1 second wick
Very big boom and flash when it goes off.

Cool - thank you! It took a while to go through the relevant PDF pages of their catalog, but I found them.

Just a thought. I have had 2 institutional bear defence guns brought into the shop with the casing from BBs broken, and jammed in the forcing cone. Guns were thoroughtly U/S without work. I do not know what make BBs these were. The polar bear biologist for Nunavut has not had any problems with the ones he uses; again, I do not know the make he uses. At any rate, make sure that they work in your gun; a separated case at the wrong time, and you are left with a not very good club.

Truflare doesn't post this warning on their BB boxes, but all other bear bangers I have shot had a warning on the catridge box advising that because they are a specialized, low pressure munition, they may leave wads or other FO in the barrel, and you should check the barrel to ensure it is free from obstructions before firing conventional ammo.

Not what I want to be doing if the banger doesn't deter Teddy, and he comes to check out the sounds of me scrambling to get a cleaning rod out of my pack, down the bore, re-checking the bore, and fumbling for slugs to do what I should have done in the first place. Nor do I want to torch off a slug behind a BBanger, only to find it DID obstruct the bore, and now Teddy just has to pull a small piece of chamber out of my skull before setting down to a slightly scorched snack.

Nice 4th of July goodies. (I always celebrate the liberty of our good friends down south on July 4.) Not much good for bears, though. In my experience with bears, they seem quite unfamiliar with munitions of any sort, and therefore are no where near as impressed by fireworks, warning shots, or threatening poses as would be any self-respecting tree-hugger.

But yeah, worth a consideration..

ykkid,

I'd have to agree with you. Leave the shotgun for slugs. Have you tried any of the bangers on bears? I've used the tru-flare pen launch ones on a black bear who was feeding at one of the ranges where I'm a member. They are effective. At first I honked my horn and flashed my headlights. The bruin just glanced over, then went back to feeding. As soon as I launched the banger, it retreated behind some trees. When the banger went off it scooted into the bushes right quick.

Hey sxyglock17,

What kind of bangers do you use? The tru-flare and Knall-Patronen (German) ones were impressive, but I wouldn't say they are equivalent to a BIG firecracker. They definitely make you jump if one went off nearby, but not comparable to some of the firecrackers I've experienced. The Knall-Patronens rate their bangers as equivalent to "M80" firecrackers.

I use the 18mm TruFlare ones. I use them in an aluminum 12GA adapter for use in my 870 shotgun (I bought a bunch off a fellow gunnut), and in a 40mm hull for my M203 custom made by the local machine shop (because using a 12ga adapter in your M203 is a no-no).

I use a slug aimed in a safe direction, with a tube full of more slugs in case yogi isn't impressed with the noise.

I've got a box of the blanks for training bird dogs kicking around, but have only used them once for a bear. He just looked at me and wandered slowly off.

We have them at our Wholesale store in Calgary. Id only assume that the store in Edmonton would have them as well. If not, get them to bring them in from Calgary.

sxyglock17,

40mm?!? That's a f***ing huge banger :!: The Tru-flares and Knall-Patronens are only 15mm.
