What do you pay for 12 gauge slugs ?

Over here.. its seem to be pretty much 1$ / each (with taxes). In box of 5 shells.. Federals..

Is there a better deal out there (cheaper) or is it pretty much the average price all over canada ? [not for hunting but for practice shooting]

Roughly $1 is what I always pay for my slugs. 12 gauge, 2/75". I've seen some Federal for $4.49 for a box of 5 which is the cheapest I've ever seen slugs for. Otherwise it's more like $4.99-5.49 for a box of 5 (again for Federal or Remington Sluggers, the 2 most common types I see) or $14.99 for a 15 pack of Winchester at Canadian Tire.

I'm cheap and I turn 100 round value packs of birdshot into slugs.

Far far most cost efficient, it's how I am able to afford to shoot slugs ALL DAY.

If you shoot DIY slugs ALL DAY.. you must spend months to make those. Thats seem to be a lot of work. Thank you for the video, i have learn something new today!

And when i say "a lot of work".. i have only shot 15 slugs at the range this weekend and it took me less than 5 minutes shooting slowly.

Sellier and Bellot are usually cheaper than the rest, but not many places keep them in stock.

Speaking of which, SFRC has some in stock, and they're great to deal with.

Me? I just got my Lee 1 oz slug mold yesterday and cast 25 slugs last night and a bunch of 000 buck. :D

Slugs will cost you time or money, it's your pick, but mine will cost me about 27 cents, ($67 taxes in for 250), and a bit of time doing something I enjoy.

Touché.. well said!

Its a struggle between my time (its precious) and having zero equipment to melt lead. How much cash for everything needed to turn birdshot into slugs ? im curious!

In my situation, my thread subject still win... i need to buy slugs and looking for some kind of deal / good source

If you do them like that youtube video, it will be about $25 for the Lee Lead dipper, and about $24-$28 plus taxes and shipping for a lee 1 oz slug mold and a propane torch $20-50 depending on model.

I have a bigger set up for smelting wheel weights;
propane burner $45ish for the dirty smelting, (I use my BBQ tank, if you don't that's more money)
ingot mold $18? or use muffin tins
old stainless steel flea market pot and holey spoon and pouring ladle $12?
lee production pot about $80 taxed
lee 1 oz slug mold $24-28
various wax and flux $10

Keep in mind you can also buy a Lee 00 buck mold that casts 18 balls for about $60ish.

I hear you about the time , but my hours are capped at 40 per week so anything I do to save a dollar is like earning two.

I have the lyman mold for both 12 and 20 gauge. I make my slugs with pure lead. Load them up to the max and they are amazing. Shot a tree with the 20 to see if it was on at 50 yards. It went right through a 12 inch birch. The hole is the same size all the way through.

Ya I got everything from a thrift store minus the slug mold so I'm saving big money now, only commercial ammo I buy anymore is surplus 54R and 22LR.

while i see myself making my own.. thanks for the tips..

Can i assume there is no real "deal" when buying slugs.. its pretty much 1$/each
(beside huge packs of 125 Sellier and Bellot rounds at 105$.. which is a small "deal" overall)

Add on tax and its nearly $1 each again....which really sucks given you can turn a 100 pack of birdshot into low recoil slugs at .30 cents

Add your initial investment of under $100 for a mold and few other bits needed to melt your lead and you save money long term really fast, I've got garbage bags full of hulls to reload and I'm getting nearly 200 lbs of lead bb's for free in a few days oo man BIG SAVINGS!! :D:D:D:D

I am going to be one damn busy reloading monkey hehe.

Well call me crazy, but methinks that's a heck of a fine idea. Instead of melting the shot one slug at a time in a dipper, the obvious improvement would be to open up several boxes of shells at once and dump the shot into a melting pot. Done that way, a guy could certainly be producing slug loads both efficiently and cheaply (around $0.25 per round). Interesting indeed...

lee 20lb pot, 25lb bag of shot, makes round 350 slugs

One dollars a piece is acceptable for slugs or 00 buckshots, that is what they cost all included in a big store in Montreal, when they ship 175 buckshoot in a can for 135.00 +tax 7.00 + 35.00 shipping it cost 177.00 no deal there... JP.

the only thing i didn't liked was the stuff used to seal the finished shell.. probably dont matter to the 12 gauge but look silly :)

would be cool to put the cut shell lid on top of the sealing compound and make it look store-bought just for esthetic sake.. as long as it shoot well, i can see a futur in that technique.

Small price question turn into long term solution.. CGN kick ass!!

^^I was thinking the same thing.
Personally, me thinks melted wax would be a better "sealer". Plus, it'll dry/solidify quicker.
