12 Gauge Slugs - worth reloading?

I just got a couple of bags of grey wads and with 20grs Unique and the 1oz Lee lug they crimp properly with the winchester high brass hulls. Previous I was using pink wads, but had to put 2xcardboard discs behind the slug to get the right height for the crimp.

bought 12ga nitro disks at the show to use with the pink wads, thought they went behind the slug, but they are to wide to fit into the wad. Where exactly are they meant to go?

Have some loaded slugs, where the end of the hull curled over and into the hull sort of like a factory slug rather than a nice closed flat crimp. Would these be ok to fire or would the curled ends create to much pressure?

I once knew someone who used on of Lee's electric melting pots in an apartment to cast, he just put it on a cookie sheet on top of the stove with the vent hood running. Just a thought.

I recommend using 20 gauge nitro disks, they fit WAY better and nicely inside the wad under the slug.

Close, the petals are not as tightly folded over, wonder if they would hold the slug for to long letting the pressure build?

I load a .690 diameter round ball. Casting slugs is too painful for me. Use 2 3/4 mag loads and a Winchester white wad. Leave the petals on. Use an over shot card and crimp like shot. Use a open cylinder bore and you can cast them from wheel weights. They stay good to maybe 60 yds. They're just devastating. Take a metal pail to the range and you'll see what I mean.

Even if you have to buy the cast slugs..its still cheaper to roll your own...Lee load all..Unique, Herco, Universal Clays, HS6, trap hulls and wads. I use AA hulls and white or yellow wads..easy to load..I don't use my load all for the powder. I just use a Lee scoop.

what scoop(s) do you use for what powder?

HS-6 2.5cc the load data I found is for 36 grains
Uni Clays 2.5 ,2.8, 3.1 depending on the load data
Unique The load all bushing 198 I think will work or 3.1 cc scoop

I still weigh out the loads as per the data and find the scoop that is closest

Their is a data sheet that comes with the Lee mould..


I mostly use Universal Clays for all my shot gun and pistol ammo..
