12 guage and fireworks

20ga in front of a 12ga in an 870, no failure:

I don't think a locked breech(single/double) barrel gun will handle it as well; the pump action popped open because of the excess pressure. My Mossberg only pops open on very hot loads; even then it doesn't open to the point the shell is extracted... If you had kept it fully locked, I'll bet it would have fragged the chamber.

Consider this:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9sN8tyzCUS8&feature=plcp&context=C4548060VDvjVQa1PpcFOoZgf9KcOB1X7dyxXmyk_HSchQ7gE65AE%3D

2" of mud in the barrel of 870, no failure:

If you've ever examined pressure curves for a shotgun, pressure drops off dramatically in the last few inches of the barrel. By the time the payload reaches the obstruction, the pressures would have already peaked and won't usually raise the chamber pressure enough to rupture it.

.50 BMG from a 12 gauge (H&R?):

A 50bmg uses extremely slow burning powder, it will never reach full pressure in an overbore barrel such as a shotgun barrel. As you see in the vid, there is good amount of powder in the bucket.

Shotgun barrels vary widely, to suggest that all modern barrels are "overbuilt" is foolhardy and irresponsible; there are many cases of (modern) shotguns blowing up with a simple double charge...

hahah exactly what i pictured when i was reading that :D

-the roman candle balls seem like a cool idea though

I made the shells and I'm going to try it out tomorrow. I'm going to use an old $50 shotgun, duct tape it to a tree and fire it with a long string.

Boy, am I glad somebody else tries all this $hit, so I don't have to be taken to the hospital to have my hands sewn back on....

I do remember letting off a 12 ga. reload that must have been an overdose of powder. One heck of a bang, no damage. Scary.

As bad of a idea as it it, I really want to see it... would look really cool... However, you can see something similar lit up if you google : FPS Russia Dragons breath.... cool shotgun shells... actually the whole video of different shotgun shells is rather cool

I never implied that all modern shotguns are overbuilt; just that modern shotguns that are overbuilt can handle much higher pressure.

I've never seen a 20ga in front of a 12ga not fail and also not blow the pump back. That explains a lot including why the single shots can't do it even if they are overbuilt. Never thought of that.

That 2.5oz wax slug load is very interesting. It looks like there is almost no room for powder in the hull so they must be using a fast burning powder. I have loaded 2oz wax slug loads using 3-1/2" load data (fits in a 3" shell since there is no need for a crimp) and it kicked something awful.

Back on topic...

Dragons breath uses magnesium pellets I believe. Much hotter burning than most fireworks (and prohibited :()

For (relatively safe) fun you could just put an entire roman candle into an unloaded shotgun and light it. Would look sweet and a lot safer than modified fireworks of any kind.
