Looking to grab a shotgun, as a 'buddy' gun. I'd like to take my friends out hunting, but not everyone has a shotgun. Some simple single shot would do. I'd also want to use it for myself firing slugs.

I figure two birds with one shotgun (PUN!). My local gunshop has a used 12 and 20 guage. Do 20 guage shotguns offer any advantage besides recoil when it comes to slugs?

Not really...slug shooters generally move to the 20gauge for slugs to reduce some recoil. The 20 gets the job done nicely for whitetail size game and wont beat the hell outta to shooter like the 12ga does.

If I was buying a "buddy" gun I'd go 12 gauge just for the different load selections etc...
all the buck shot, field, turkey, waterfowl..... lots to choose from in 12ga not so much in 20ga. Also with slugs some guns only like to fire one or 2 types of ammo accurately.
Every ammo manufacturer will offer 12ga most multipul offerings
JMHO

Either gauge will work but more choices for your "buddy gun" with the 12ga
