Damn it.
I had to wade into the property, in snow that was better than knee deep in places. I was pretty hot by the time I got in, but, by unzipping the coveralls at the legs for ventilation, I wasn't sweaty at all.
I was using Fogduckers tent blind. I set up under a big cedar tree, in Dumbdawg & Fogduckers back field, so I looked like part of the tree.
The wind was switching around, gusting this way and that. But I settled my but on an old milk crate in the tent, with the windows unzipped just far enough to shoot through with the crossbow.
around 10:00 I saw a doe work her way up across my back path, eating sumac. I kept her around for a bit, with the occasional use of my can call.
She was gone about 10:20.
I needed to take a leak bad, so I walked up the trail a bit to get warm, and took care of that.
When I settled back down in the tent, and I mean almost immediately, I heard the snow crunch, and looked towards Fogducker's bear bait can. Right in front of it, was a deer Looks like a big deer..... Holy #### that's a big deer! Then I saw his head, and easily counted six on my side, he was about sixty yards away, and in thick sumac eating. He was grunting every few minutes, so I tried with my True Talker, to imitate him just softly.
His head snapped up like somebody had hit him, and he looked straight at the tent. I figured I was screwed, but not so. He went back to eating, but now was slowly moving my way, but getting more and more into cover. Last time I saw him, he was within shooting range, but in the thick #### so bad I couldn't risk it.
He looked at the tent again, and just quietly disappeared.

He'll be there for you next year boys. I might get out tomorrow, but I doubt he'll show again.

sounds like he was with a doe...that grunting every few minutes is called a "tending" grunt, keeps them in audible contact with soon to be receptive doe.you shouldn't have mimicked him,you should have given a soft doe bleet with your call pointed AWAY from him so he couldn't pin you so easy.
If you go back armed with some estrous urine and a doe call you may get him to come in.if the doe he was following stays around,so will he.
he pinned a possible threat to his mating plan that never materialized, not a hunter.I'd be there as long as I could when the wind allows, that doe won't be in season forever.
course thats just my opinion...

good luck.

I had doe scent out in numerous locations, and I did try my bleat call. He totally ignored it. Like he didn't even hear it, even though the true talker I used to call him is much quieter than my bleat.
If it had been rifle season, He'd be being cut up right now.
The call worked just as it should have, he was coming in. Just my bad luck he made me before I could get a shot.

By the way, I've been hunting for 40 years, I'm not a newbie to this.

keep at er JYC..for some reason that corner of that field was like a deer magnet this year..
that bigger buck i got last month was also dropped within feet of that barrel, and the smaller one was taken about 50 yards out from it..
cheers and good luck

thats probably the big buck triton saw last fall in the middle of the front field on a sunday during the gun season.lol no sunday hunting there

Good luck Bob!!!!

hugggggsssssssssss from Mommabear
Thanks Mommabear. Supposed to rain tomorrow, hopefully, it will hold off until late in the day. I seem to see all the deer there between 10:00, and noon. I have yet to see one after 12:00.
Now that I have a trail in from the highway, it will be an easier walk anyway.
I think I'd have had quite a sweat on dragging that big guy all the way to the road.

Saw nothing but snow, as the wind blew so hard it was difficult to look to windward. It snowed till about one then changed to rain. I got fairly wet. There were tracks along my trail broken in the snow. But none tried it while I was there.
Yes, deer rarely move in wind, I know, but, given it was the last day, I had to go it.
I hope to get out again before all the seasons close, but it will have to be in another area, as the season there closed on the 15th.
